Dear Diary,

Tail light goes out on a car with a regular bulb....most likely a $5 bulb replacement

LED tail light goes out on a car...doesn't matter what the issue is, whole assembly has to be swapped...$450

Damn

Wait until you have one with blind spot monitors in it.

They could have made it so you could swap the led bulb. They chose not to.

Did you pay someone to do this? Did you check the price on rockauto?

Try eBay or even a local wrecking yard (Pull Apart or others). But eBay usually has a used part or new for much much less than a dealer. If you're handy with a few hand tools you can save some money. Just my two cents.

Yep it's crazy.

Also, cars nowadays are all aluminum so no more fixing most dents since aluminum stretches. They just replace whole panels. Depending on where that is it gets expensive.

I was in a little fender bender where someone rear-ended me. Wasn't much damage but they cut me a check for $4200 and I was floored. The reason is because the bed is aluminum and they have to replace the whole bed panel instead of repairing it.

Stuff like that and the headlight are reasons insurance is so high. Cars are too expensive to repair now.

There's no way to get into it. It's basically a sealed plastic case with a plug on the back.

LED headlights aren't all bulbs. Some are strip lights

It would have been $680 if I had the shop do it, $450 is just for the part that I bought to do myself. I miss older cars.

Ford wanted $1,500 to replace a rear assembly on a Corsair. The part itself was $1,000 so $500 for labor to do a 5 minute job. I bought a used one on ebay for $200 and did it myself.

People are going to start having insurance claims to fix a busted headlight.

I got clipped by a Helena Chemical truck on my way to college one morning. It was around a curve and I actually had to pull off and almost went into the ditch. His back tires caught the rear drivers side and the dude was looking back at me but kept on driving. I know for a fact he saw.

I had an exam that morning so I couldn't deal with it. Didn't even know what the damage was until after my exam. It dented the back end from the tire to tailgate and cracked my rear light. I had a buddy that used to work there so I called him and told him what happened. He told me to go and tell someone in the front office.

I left school and drove to Helena, told the girl up front and she got a manager. He looked at the damage and said, "how much to fix that?" Told him I wasn't sure. He scratched his head and said "Is $2,500 good?" and asked me not to contact my insurance. My brother was able to pull out the dent and replacing the changing the rear light assembly was easy

I remember when you could change a bulb in 5 minutes with just a screwdriver. Now it’s a multi step process.
