Seems like some enterprising cemetery owner would have started doing this at some point in history to maximize his land usage.

You'd have to drill it.

Aren't Mexican funerals done with the corpse standing up?

Meh, you could get by with 10. It's not like they're digging them with shovels and pickaxes these days either.

In some european cathedrals, important men of the church have been buried vertically because of space considerations. I recall seeing six sided engraved stones about thirty inch diameter.

Most parts of Florida and i assume most parts of Louisiana, you'd hit water doing this.

The body would still be in a coffin, right?

A better question is, why don't they stack them?

If a couple want to be buried together, why not just use one plot and bury the first one 10-12 feet deep and the second one on top? Uses less land and accomplishes the same thing.

just toss the cadavers in the furnace and you don't need to worry about maximizing your land usage at all, no?

They do. That’s what these buildings are. This one can stack them 6 high.

Because we want to think of ourselves as being at rest after we die.

Life is a struggle for most people; let them rest in death.

Yea, it happens, but I don't think it's commonplace.
