Welp, I bet I could tell you the name of the neighborhood. I'm just glad you didn't say Calera, though it would be true.

I imagine your neighbor inviting you to his BBQ and you responding, "whoa buddy, you're really invading my personal space here."

All other things being equal, the guy who BBQs in his front yard as a signal that his neighbors are welcome to stop by is probably the most friendly person on the block.

Back yards are usually fenced which would limit an easiest get away route once the shooting starts. Safety bro.

Maybe they are avoiding the evening sun in their back yard?

it's usually meant to be inviting to the neighborhood.

Walk over and grab a paper plate. Black people don't bite.

Same reason black people tend to sit on their front porches more than whitey. Cultural thing. Want to be up front to see and be seen.

Is bbqing in your front yard really a peacocking thing? Hell, even sitting in your front yard seems pretty benign.

My next door neighbors do it.
Smells good and they always offer some.
I politely decline.
I've always hated eating something someone else pays for unless it's family.

I grill in my driveway. Tired of leaving my grill on the deck to get ruined by weather. Once I'm done I roll it 5 ft into the garage and it's out of weather.

This ...

I keep my grill in the garage to keep it out of the weather. I roll it under the tree in our front yard to keep it in the shade so that when I do long smokes I can control the pit temperature better than having the grill baking in the sun.

A white family that used to live in my neighborhood would do their crawfish boils in the driveway.

I boil my crawfish in the front, on the driveway. I have logical reasons for this:

1. Jet burners are loud. The party is in the back, with music playing and women jabbering. The men hang out in the front, drink beer, and say "yep" like King of the Hill.

2. Jet burners are hot. My back patio is on the west side of my house (the only thing I hate about the house) so it is hot enough in the evenings already. Moving the 80 quart pot of boiling water to the front helped keep the patio more bearable.

3. When I'm done for the night it's a shorter walk to the gutter to dump the pot of water.

4. I like sitting on my tailgate, listening to music coming from the sound system in my garage, and boiling.

5. It's got damn America.

Oh, and I'm white.

or just racist?

I used to bbq on my front porch but that was more due to not having space in the backyard to do it.

Ya what is the point of having a front yard if its "invasive" to actually use it?
