Why do universities hire so many foreign professors who cannot communicate?

I went back to school and damn...I can hardly understand these guys. They are brilliant on paper but they can't communicate well enough to teach a class. Do universities hire them because they can pay them less?

I'm not against immigration at all...It just seems to me that communication is a big part of being a teacher.

They probably aren't at the University for the primary purpose of teaching.

The job of a professor at a R1 is research not teaching

They're there primarily to do research and get work published.

LSU is notorious for that.

Our first organic chemistry teacher didn't know his arse from his elbow, then he got fired mid-semester. Well, they bring in an Indian guy that you couldn't even understand. They ended up grading on a steep curve for the class

I am taking an online finance class right now and you can tell just by the powerpoints and emails that the teacher doesn't have a working grasp of the english language. His final exam average was a 35% because he didn't tell the testing lab that we could use scratch paper and then couldn't understand what I was asking him when I emailed him about it.

Universities don't care. They'll blame students who, hurting themselves, skip class regularly. The foreign professors may be all they can attract or afford.

I took a finance class taught by a Chinese grad student with anxiety issues. I finished with a 48% overall that got curved to a B.

I took Comparative Politics (Asia) at USC with a Taiwanese professor whose English was not very good. However, he was a very nice man whose influence in the politics of the American-China-Taiwan relationship was apparent going over his CV. He stuck strictly to the curriculum in our book, which made our exams very predictable if you actually read the material. So long as you have a professor who understands the linguistic limitations and can compensate for that, I don't see a problem with it.

A lot of foreign students have trouble getting jobs out of school because the company will have to sponsor them. If they don't get hired, they go to grad school to remain full time students to stay in the country.

Because most Americans don't want PhDs. The ones that DO get PhDs usually work in industry.

I took a computer class in college and had an Indian professor with a thick accent. I literally could not understand anything he said. The lecture might as well have been in German. I looked to change classes but the only available computer class that would work for me was full. I talked to that professor and told him my issue. He said yeah, I can’t understand that bastard either. He let me in his class and at the end of the semester gave my grade to the Indian guy so it looked like I was in his class all semester.
