All my tech friends who have 5+ years of programming experience now suddenly can't find work. They're now reduced to working for Best Buy or Starbucks while going on 5+ rounds of interviews.

What the heck is going on in our country? I remember when you could walk into any place and ask for a job the day of.

This shite is ridiculous. 2 interviews max unless you are interviewing for a c-suite position.

Maybe it's just an IT thing right now

Plenty of professions are still pretty desperate right now

Finding a job in your particular major might be difficult but plenty of jobs available until you can find exactly what you want

I literally get approached on a weekly basis by a recruiter I worked with in the past for various management and training positions. Maybe the situation you’re seeing is isolated to that specific industry?

I say this with absolutely zero data to support it, but it seems like tech companies have been over hiring for the past few years and the effects (downsizing, limited openings, or hiring freezes) are being felt now.

I read about there being so many jobs, and lots of places are advertising as hiring, but the experience of the young people i know (early 20s recent college grads and college students looking for low-skill work) is similar. A lot of people applying and interviewing but not getting hired. Kids with good personalities, normal in appearance, etc. All struggling to find work.

Big chunk of job postings are not real. The company is posting them but they are not actually hiring. The illusion of their organization actually being productive and healthy.

Mismatched job requirements from employers and description of skills from workers.

Applicant tracking systems are terrible.

Tech is in freefall right now. With higher interest rates, the free money spigot to Silicon Valley that flowed throughout the 2010’s has dried up. Many of these companies were never profitable and/or invested heavily into useless boondoggles that didn’t work. Some simply became too woke to function. AI is heavily replacing brute force coding, greatly reducing demand, and the ability to work remotely is allowing big companies to offshore more work with less issues. The economy is already in shambles in general, but the issues in tech are especially bad.

i mean, are your tech friends stupid? when they got a call for the 3rd interview, they should've told the person they were moving on. When they asked "why", they should've answered, "because I'm too good to work at a company that can't make the right decision and hire me already."

There is zero reason to do any of that if it wasn't known up front when applying for the position. It's a waste of time and a company you don't want to work for anyway.

I was informed in February that I would be laid off in March. Thankfully I found a decent job and started in late April but between February and May, it is the only job opening that I found that was worth a damn. Thankfully, I landed that one. In previous job searches, I'm usually inundated with random positions and recruiters burning up my phone with openings. This time around, the recruiters told me that there was nothing and to jump onto the first offer that I get.

The job market is really really bad right now, unless you aspire to be a road worker.

Maybe too many people "learned to code"??

I know two people who have applied for over 150+ jobs and still looking. One has 5 years experience and the other 10 in their respective fields. Job market sucks right now.

I started my new job today, and after I accepted my position was asked to interview with 2 more companies.

I didn't find it that difficult.

Just have to put in the work by send lots of applications and resumes to get through all the BS they get.

My job just gave me 10% raise. I assume so I don’t leave.
IT companies are paying for future AI development by reducing headcount
