WSJ: LSU's Lazy River and the Student-Fee Sham

There may be no better symbol of American higher education’s wasteful indulgence than Louisiana State University’s lazy river. Part of a recently opened $85 million recreation center, the lazy river is where students ride inflatable tubes on a water current in the shape of the school’s initials. As F. King Alexander, LSU’s president, said before the ribbon-cutting: “We’re here to give you everything you need. . . . I don’t want you to leave the campus ever.” And why would they?
When asked to defend the water ride, the administration was quick to respond that the students voted for it. As the Chronicle of Higher Education reported in October, “a student government resolution, passed in 2011, authorized a $135 fee increase over three years to finance the project.” Kurt J. Keppler, vice president for student affairs, explained, “I didn’t have a dog in the hunt. We could have built half as large an expansion. But when we talked to the students, we’re seeing they want a climbing wall, they want an outdoor aquatic center.”
loLSU
Also, LSU got some nice press with people whining about losing tax deductibility on TAF donations (It's about the kids... muh Student Athletes!).
Keep it up, Tigers!

WSJ is right and LSU is wrong.
So maybe 5% of the student population in a single year voted to increase fees for all students forever? Seems fair.

Did the incoming class of 2018 get a vote? Because they will still pay the fees.
fricking imbecile.

It wasn't forever.

The rest of the world can suck it. LSU students, just like any body represented by government, have a right to place priorities on what they want, and to pay for it themselves. If someone doesn't like it... they are irrelevant to the situation.
In short, LSU students wanted the pool. LSU students voted to pay for the pool. LSU students paid for the pool. LSU students got the pool.
If the students want a new library or to fund a scholarship program or whatever the rest of the country thinks they need to spend their money on, then put the proposal on the ballot, pay for it, build it.
The rest of the country sees LSU as a joke academically anyhow. There's little LSU can do in our lifetimes or our great-grandchildren's lifetimes to move the needle on that.

Yes, I'm really jealous I missed out on an opportunity to enjoy a lazy river!

As all students have done for the classes that follow. My class paid for the original rec center that I never used. The generation before me built the student union. That's how it works.

So you're saying student fees only went up for a limited period of time? Link me to that, please.

But students STILL pay fees for those things. That's the part you guys are overlooking. Once they are built, the university keeps charging fees. The fees never go down. They only go up.

The new UREC is amazing. The lazy river is just an easy target. If the students voted for it they should get it.

Then at every town hall these idiots ask the politicians what they are going to do about their student debt.
Posted on 12/16/17 at 11:47 am to SpqrTiger
Former students who graduated within the last year or so got memberships once they graduated.

It's like sucking that much dick has scrambled your brain...that or you were born stupid.

The money came from a special student fee assessment, approved in 2011 and earmarked specifically for the project.
“The funds for the project come directly from the student fee and can only be used for the project,”
You know the other thing? Students who paid the fees were given 2 years free access to the new facility...even as alums

This game is by no means limited to LSU. The same thing happened at Wisconsin. They held a "student referendum" on a new student union. Less than 5% of students voted, but student fees increased by about 50%. They have not and will not go down.
Bear in mind that UW already had a student union. Now they have two.
