Youth baseball: bat that maximizes swing speed or biggest bat they can manage?

I recently got my 7 year old a bat and found the discussion around bat sizing pretty interesting. Almost all the people on various baseball forums were suggesting smaller length bats than suggested by the bat sizing guides you can find online.

Also, the prevailing general sentiment was that “lighter is better” and/or to get the bat that lets the player swing the fastest. It was often said to not get a bat the player can “grow into.”

I went with the baseball guides/sorta old school mentality. My son is almost 4 ft and weighs less than 60 lbs. I got him a 27 inch, -10 alloy 2 1/4 diameter bat. He has to really make a point to keep his elbow up so it doesn’t fall back in his stance, and he sometimes falls off balanced when swinging, but my theory is that as long as he stays balanced during most of his swings and can make consistent enough contact, it’s better for his development than getting him a lighter bat that maximizes his current swing speed.

What do you guys think?

First off he needs a big barrel 2 3/4. From there you want him swinging it like a club. He probably should be in at most a 26”.

He needs his hitting coach to look at him on the launch monitor to see what he needs

This.

26 inches if you do a drop 10.

Some good bats (hype fire) even make a drop 12 for the younger kids.

Elite 10 year olds use a 28 or 29 inch bat. 27 seems big for a 7 year old unless it’s a drop 12.

I crafted my son a bat out of a tree that was struck by lightning. Step up your game.

Honest answer. Get him a bat he has really good control of. My son was always the biggest kid on most of his teams and often swung bats shorter or lighter than kids much smaller than him. Power does not necessarily come from the bat. Yes some bats are “hotter” than others, but if he’s late or missing the ball due to the extra weight and length of the bat, then he needs something he can control better.

You're putting him in a position to learn bad habits, not dissimilar to having a kid use a basketball that's too big/heavy for them. I wouldn't artificially shorten the bat to try to get faster, but I would go as short as needed for him to be able to comfortably swing with proper form.

Geez.... when I was 7, the coach had a green bag with 2 or 3 bats in it and you got whichever bat wasn't being used.

This goes to my point. That big barrel may maximize his production today but my theory is this isn’t best for his development. The only exception I can see is if the player really sucks, lacks confidence, and needs the “help” just to stay with the game instead of otherwise giving up.

First off, never buy your kid a fricking bat. Let the other parents be those idiots

2nd, the hell you talking about swing speed and size for a 7 year old? He’s 7!

Focus on mechanics and hand/eye coordination instead of wasting money on a bat

His league is USA, not USSA. Plus you have to be nuts to pay $250 for a bat for a 7 year old. I paid $50.

Stop posting stupid words and listen. Contact is his best friend. Big barrel is needed.

Means short is better. They can whip it through zone and learn to keep hands tighter to body. Biggest mistake is always too much bat.
