How does the decathlon work?

I understand it’s the best athlete at 10 different events but I’m curious how the scoring works and the athletes. Do they ONLY do decathalons or is it athletes who also specialize and compete in individual events.

Most only do the Dec. I’m sure there’s some that may have an individual event as well.
Scoring wise there’s a standard that’s 1000 pts for each event. Then there’s a formula to calculate your score based on how close (or over/under) you are to that 1000 pt standard.

They can compete as an individual in other events as there is no rule against it. They would still have to qualify for that though.
I tried to look and see if I could find anyone that had a good showing in both the decathlon and as an individual but couldn’t find anyone.
Women apparently had someone in the pentathalon set a WR in the long jump as an individual and then got silver in the pentathalon

SI had an article drop (I just read it earlier):
These are the 10 events in the Decathlon:
1. 100m race
2. Long jump
3. Shot put
4. High jump
5. 400m race
6. 110m hurdles
7. Discus throw
8. Pole vault
9. Javelin throw
10. 1500m
How Does Decathlon Scoring Work?
Scoring for the Decathlon is derived from a formula that—as you would expect—awards higher scores for faster times on track events and higher scores for greater distances or heights on-field events. The formula is a bit much to use as a guide for following along leisurely, but it essentially scales each event against a base score and builds it into the full score for the event. But if you're into that, this website has an IAAF scoring calculator.
Simpler, per World Athletics, here is the performance needed in each event to score 1,000 points in each:
Event
Performance
100m
10.39 seconds
Long jump
7.76m
Shot put
18.40m
High jump
2.21m
400m
46.17 seconds
110m hurdles
13.80 seconds
Discus
56.17m
Pole vault
5.29m
Javelin
77.19m
1500m
3:53.79

Ashton Eaton (former WR holder in decathlon and current WR holder in heptathlon) won gold in '12 and '16 in decathlon. He competed in 400m and long jump individual events. I remember him placing just outside the podium in Brazil in the 400m. I usually pay extra attention to 400m and hurdles in track because that's what I ran in HS, so I definitely remember him.

Our Dec guy my first two years in Monroe was a pv specialist and decent jav guy. Won the Dec, either won or finished second in the vault, and I think may have been top 3 in the jav. Just barely missed making Eugene (less than 10 pts if I remember right)

Just looking at the events involved, I would think the shot put and the track events would negate each other as far as competing in individual events. Meaning, someone who could challenge in the shot put as an individual event, would have zero shot at finishing high at any of the running events... those guys are too burly. And the runners (particularly the distance guys) would not fare well in the shot put.

No he didn’t. His personal best in the 400m of 45.00 would have gotten him 6th in the 2016 individual 400m, but he didn’t qualify. Maybe he ran individual at US Olympic trials?
