I have an 06. Not sure about 05, but after the first year, they are pretty much the best 2 stroke outboard engine ever made.

They are good, strong and efficient engines. Keep up with the maintainence and it should run for a long time. There is an updated air compressor, and the exhaust tuner has been known to come unbolted on the small block Optimaxs. Have a certified Mercury dealer look it over for you. 99-01 Optimaxs need to be avoided.

I have a 2009 triton 186 with an optimax.

Had to replace a water pump but alls good besides that.

Don't forget to fill out your BP form so you can get your free power pole.

Unbiased opinion of course.

It is a good engine, I know of compressor issues, but all have some issue.
You'll do fine with it as long as you trust the previous owner and his preventive maintenance efforts.

Of course. The statement came from a mechanic.

I have a 2001 225 OPTI and have replaced the comoressor once. I have almost 5400 hours on it. It's been a great great motor.

That being said it will blow up tomorrow....

have a 2005 optimax on an 18' champion, I've had no issues, and i know the guy I bought the boat and motor from very well, and he had no issues with it. So if the price is right go with it

I have an '07, 115. Other than some varnish in the fuel pump which I assume was ethanol related, motor has run great.

Also, one of the pitfalls of the opti is the price of optimax/dfi oil, if you choose to use the Mercury brand. That's all I have used in mine & just got 3 gallons for $99 w/ free shipping from Amazon.

I've used the premium, but not DFI oil for a while with zero issues.

Just a tip. Run Quickleen in every tank, also buy your oil from your local merc dealer. DFI oil costs me $40 at academy. It's 26$ at my dealer. Plugs also need to be checked yearly. Poor idle is a strong sign you need plugs. I have an 08 150 that has been a very solid motor for me. Almost 500 hours.

Don't get too hung up on oil. I haven't ever put Mercury oil in mine just Yama lube and I've gotten over 5k hours out of it.
