410 Youth Shotguns

I just had boy number 2. I’m looking to add a 410 to my collection. I checked out the single shot yildiz 410 at academy. It’s cheap so I’m probably going to buy it anyway. Any thoughts/recommendations? I already have a youth 870 20 gauge I grew up with and a 20 gauge 1100. I mainly looking for an excuse to buy another shotgun.

no brainer baw ... Savage-Stevens .410 single shot. New around $175 , used in good condition $75 to $125.
Purchased from your cousin's uncle's neighbor $50
I still have mine from 1973 and it's great for squirrel hunting.
H&R Makes a similar version. You can always buy a 20 gauge barrel and swap out later

Also, congrats on having another kid and your first thought being "I need to buy another shotgun"

My first shotgun at @ 8 yrs old was an H&R single shot .410 shotgun. I learned a lot about gun safety and making that first shot count.

New England and H&R are no longer unfortunately
Got my kid a mossberg .410 pump and it was a good little starter gun. Killed 2 squirrels with it and now he is big enough for a 20

Where are you going to get 410 shells?

H&R was acquired by JJE Capitol during the Remington sell-off. NoDak Spud (formerly located in Minnesota) was another company purchased by JJE as the CEO of NDS is in charge of future production of the H&R Firearms. The entire company moved its new operations to South Carolina earlier this year (2022). There is no set date when firearms manufacturing will start. 2023, 2024 ??? who knows

410 single is the worse gun you can ever buy for a kid. After it's cocked, he has to hold hammer back with his thumb and pull trigger to put back on safe. They may also forget that hammer is in firing position. A 20 gauge bolt action or pump would be my choice. When he's an old man he will still be hunting small game with his dad's 20 gauge gift.

My dad got me a little single shot 20 guage when I was like 10 or so. I carried a BB gun rabbit hunting prior. I remember walking through briars running the dogs with the gun in one hand and a spare shell in the other hand so I could quickly reload haha. Good times.
Then later when I started turkey hunting, he told me about as a kid he used his iver johnson single shot 12 guage, so wanting to be like dad I started carrying that. He was right...it kicked like a mule

Let me say I actually agree with this. Every time Id put the hammer down after not shooting I was so worried it was going to go off. It never did, but boy I thought about it.
I still want to fix up my bolt action 12 guage. thats just a cool gun

While I want to disagree with you because that's what I grew up with and killed my first everything with, it's hard to disagree with your point. The one single event that has guided my handling of firearms more than anything was when I was about 7 yrs old and my thumb slipped off the hammer on my old new england .410 and it went off. It was pointed in the air at the time, but the panic of an unintended discharge has resonated for 40 yrs.
That being said, I've been pawn shop shopping for one for my son for a couple months now.

Boy that brings back memories. My dad gave me a Winchester .410 as my first gun 44 years ago. Still own that gun.
OP I have not a clue on who even manufacturers those type of “first guns” anymore. I’m not familiar with the name you mentioned at Academy. I commend you for buying your son his first shotgun. Much better choice than pulling a XBox or PlayStation off the shelf.
Recently I was in the market for an over under to quail hunt with. I was surprised that more than a few manufactures offer them in a .410 gauge.
Have you considered a .28 gauge? That might offer you more choices in manufactures. It’s a little bit more recoil but not a whole lot more. My wife isn’t all that big and that’s what she shoots.

Weagle,
In all honesty, a .410 might be the worst shotgun to to start a kid on. Even though 95% of the people on this board started with that exact gun (as did I).
A .410 is for experts and a kid can and will get frustrated with it.
My son 1st shotgun was a Franchi Affinity Compact that he still shoots.
When we 1st started he was aloud 1 shell only until he proved he would be safe with the gun.
He started when he was around 8 with that gun.
He's 16 now and can easily out-shoot me. He's on his school's trap team and is shooting upper 90s.

Good luck finding .410 in steel shot if you plan on bringing him duck hunting.

I had the same thing happen to me when I was about 12 but not with my .410. It was with my Winchester 30-30. I was very aware that hammer could slip so I had the muzzle pointed to the dirt 4’ away from me. It was cold as hell, my fingers were numb, and I was deer hunting when it happened. I had my dad get the gunsmith to put something on that hammer to help my fingers get a better hold on that hammer. The positive that resulted from it last my entire lifetime in the fact these guns can go off even when you are doing your very best to be safe.
