Looking for a rifle for my son (10, no pics) probably in 350 legend. Pretty much narrowed it down to the CVA and Ruger American Gen 2. CVA is a couple hundred cheaper but I have 0 experience with CVA

Not looking to spend a ton, as I'll probably need to get him something else in a couple years.

I bought one for son a few years ago in 7mm08. We ended up getting rid of due to light primer strikes . I sent it back to CVA twice and it still would do it randomly . It was a sweet little guy to carry in the woods.

That seems odd in a hammer fired gun.

I am surprised at how good the trigger feels in a cheap hammer fired rifle.

CVA is a great rifle. It depends on what caliber you choose.
Those crack barrel single shot rifles kick like hell in larger calibers.

I would look at the ruger gen 2 in 308 or 7mmo8 unless you are needing straight wall. I bought my then 11 year old gen 2 ruger in 308 and its been great. Has muzzlebrake so hardly kicks.

Don't need straight wall, just had it reommended by a few people with kids. We don't shoot over 200 yards so wanted to get him something that had a little thump without him flinching.

I considered 308 but if he can use this for 3-4 years I can step him all the way up into big boy calibers

All three of my boys started with 7mmo8 and they handled it great. With a brake (which most gen 2’s already have ) it hardly kicks. I just love that caliber for deer. I liked it so much I bought my dad one in a BLR.

I agree. I have several lever actions and never that issue until then.

350 legend is a great choice.
Especially at the ranges you’re talking about.

I have 2 of them - a 44 mag and a 35 Remington. For what they are, they are worth every penny. Small, compact, and accurate. Love hunting with them out of a box or in the woods. And surprisingly a good stock trigger.

.243 might be a little better choice, lot better ammo selection.

Impressed with the 35 whelen I borrowed from dad. Currently looking at 45-70 to justify another gun and potentially use for bear in Wyoming as well

Bergara barrels on the CVA Scouts.

I have two of the gen1 Ruger Americans and like them for what they are…a cheap, accurate, sloppy bolt, ugly rifle. I imagine the gen2 is better and the 3 position safety is a huge bonus.

I’d buy the Scout over the Ruger even if the Scout was a couple hundred more, making it the same as the Ruger.

I have the Optima Elite in 45-70. It has a Bergara barrel and has killed plenty deer. Bought it off a guy for $250.

The ruger gen 2 has a last shot hold open that you have to take the mag out to close it again. Kind of strange

I've never owned one but you can walk around any deer lease in the south east and almost everyone under 25 had one for their first deer rifle.
