I have a rod and Penn reel for this purpose but never really put it to use as my days off are usually on a week day. Might give it a go the next few weeks. What's the best setup for a leader?

Always used a "jumbo" carolina rig. Bead->Sinker->Bead->Swivel->Leader->Circle hook.

As far as LB test for leader I'd probably go with 50-60lb. I don't see a problem leaning toward heavier side if you'll be near MS River(Muddy water) and Rigs(Abrasive structure).

Egg sinker sitting on top of barrel swivel. Red or black circle hook on a live hard tail will catch slab snappers instead of the normal 16in fish on cut bait or squid.

I use knocker rig.

Slide 8-10oz egg on mainline. Tie swivel on end of mainline. 4' 80lb mono leader. Big 3x circle hook.

Used to use the big pre-made carolina rigs but find they tangle more.

Do I need to use an inline hook or offset? I know some places are forcing a certain hook

I use inline for less swallowed hooks. Mustad Demon Perfect Circle or Lazer Sharp when I'm in a pinch.

2-4oz barrel weight above a swivel. size depends on current and depth. i like as light as i can go. then 2-3' of 80lb mono for leader, circle hook. pretty basic setup and works for me.

I use a 3 way swivel. On one the loops in the swivel I tie strap the banks sinker(s) depending on the current. It’s easier to quickly tie strap a weight when you get to your spot. Also easy to cut the tie strap off when your finished for the ride home.

3 ft or so of 80lb flourocarbon and a circle hook. I find a large chunk of Bonita works great, smaller hard tails, or pinfish. Hope y’all tear em up

Regular ol souped up Carolina rig with a 2 or 3 Oz weight, bout 2 feet of 40lb leader, and a regular ol arse black circle hook.

Most importantly, a big knife on standby so you can cut the giant arse sharks off rigbt at the hook. Grab the weight and swivel before you cut off a 6 foot shark, or it'll break something/someone as soon as the knife hits the leader.

A lot of guys here us the knocker rig....

Egg sinker, bead, circle hook. Basically a saltwater texas rig

I personally never use a sliding weight without a bead in between. The below is without the bead. Just add a 8mm bead between the hook and weight

The classic knocker has caught more reef fish than anything else combined most likely, but I’m now a huge fan of the “hogball” type rig with lighter leader of 30-40lb. You’ll lose some fish in the wreck, but you’ll get more bites, feel bites better, and can use lighter tackle.

This is a great rig with frozen bait or a Bonita strip, and can easily use live bait also.

I have been using that thing trying to catch a damn Hogfish. Still unable to catch one. LOL

I have been putting shrimp on it.

I like it. I have two separate dealers looking for a circle hook designed to be poured in a jighead. We will make them and add them to our saltwater line if we can get one that works and is legal to fishing for reef fish.

So far the ones they found are not what I am looking for.

I bought a mold online for the heads above that has 2 oz to 8 oz. You have to add the brass pieces to tie on and add the hooks to, but I don't think those really matter much. With the brass pieces you can then add a snap ring and then add circle hooks.

I bought the mold because everyone wants like $8 each for the 5-8 oz ones and the mold was $80 so I figured i'd break even after like 2 trips lol.

But that doesn't do you a lot of good looking to retail them.

ETA: I really like these over a knocker rig because you are essentially tied strait to the hook. A knocker rig you generally have a good size leader between the weight and hook, so this can prevent you from feeling a good bite. I'll go up to a 6-8 ft leader for grouper with knocker rigs.

It is essentially the same deal that happening in freshwater fishing when we transitioned from a texas rig to a shaky head. Gives the bait a 90deg bend which makes the bait stand up off the bottom and you dont have a sliding weight

This. The sharks are insanely bad now. Catch 1 or 2 snapper and they move in.
