Built a gravity deer feeder out of a 55gal drum

I got a new clean 55 gal drum for free, so I decided to build a gravity feeder out of it. I bought a leg kit, game winner gravity feeder drum adapter, a funnel, and a plastic top. Got about $100 in it, but it's still a lot cheaper than a Boss Buck feeder. I know it's pretty late in the year to start feeding protein, but I'm thinking straight corn in it would be a bad idea for coons. Is it worth it to fill it up with roasted soybeans during hunting season, or do I run pellets? Cheapest would be corn, but I could always mix corn and soybeans, etc. I want it in place in a new food plot I got so it will be ready for protein pellets after the rut is over and build up for next season.

I got it taken apart right now after I just finished all the fab work yesterday. I'll post a pic when I set it up in the field. Need to figure out the feed situation first.

I was hoping for some advice on the feed instead of everyone just checking out my feeder. Here, for your trouble

We're still feeding Buck Boosters protein. And the deer are still hammering it.

haven't been feeding protein, how long does it take them to get on it? Is it worth it to start pellets now, or just use soybeans till after the rut?

FWIW, we start protein right about the peak of rut.. even if they don't spend too much time eating then they wear themselves down so much we like to have it available. We stop filling the protein feeders until about now...

Edited to add...

You can change the neck on it to be a sling type for corn. We have one or two that we do this on.

So I was going to go ahead and set it up when I plant my food plot, so they get used to it instead of surprising them with it late in the season. In an effort to keep coons out of it, I don't think I'll put straight corn in it till then, because I'd rather not just let it sit empty. Figured they might eat soybeans through the season, then switch to protein pellets in January. Anybody ever use rice bran pellets?

No experience with rice bran pellets here. Not because I don't like the idea, but just not readily available in South Texas. Lyssy and Eckel probably have it, but their own protein mix seems to work for us.

Doesn't take long. Buck Boosters has an apple scent/flavor.

#1 it does not matter what you put in it coons will eat the hell out of it.

#2 how quickly deer find and use it depends on where you put it more than what you put in it, IMO

#3 I would change out the top from plastic to a metal top. American Hunter makes one for 29.99 shipped to your door available on walmart.com. the squirrels will chew a hole in the plastic and any water at all will ruin 350 lbs of protein.

#4 to keep the protein pellets of choice from clumping up with humidity, I suggest running a mix of corn and protein. at least 1:2 corn to protein.

#5 for strong sweet smell, quick draw, and good protein content it is hard to beat 16% sweet feed mixed with corn

#6 for durability against moisture, mixes without pellets but instead roasted soybean and corn are hard to beat.

#7 if you attach those legs in the middle of the barrel it will be lower and easier to fill.

Good luck!

Yeah, totally messed that up. I didn't think about the funnel and the bolts on the interior. I ended up having to do some coonass engineering on the inside to make the funnel work. It's messed up, but will work. If anyone builds a feeder like this, listen to Bleeding Purple, bolts in the middle ring.

I can't really add to the answers you've already received, but if that was on my lease the hogs would have it knocked over and destroyed in about a day...bastards!
