If I use pillow traps laying on the bottom in shallow water (tie a string and toss in the pond from bank) the crawfish should stay alive if we’re running them regularly and not leaving over night, correct?

I have some traps for deep water where I leave part of it sticking above water and wondering if I could use these in crawfish ponds by tossing them out and not staking the nets vertically.

I’ve got limited and unsuccessful crawfishing experience, want to keep trying with the kids and would be nice to have some success while we’re at it.

Depends how long they can hold their breath. Crawfish need air, man.

You do know they have gills, right?

To OP, it depends how the O2 is in the pond. This time of year you should be ok. You can make sure you are good by putting a couple empty water bottles (with tops) in the trap if you are throwing them. They will float the end.

This - as a general rule, at least in my experience, there shouldn’t be any issues until the later part of April/early May, remembering there are exceptions every rule, and the likelihood of having crawfish death from oxygen depletion in a completely submerged pillow trap is less in shallow water than in deeper water.

Another point to consider is your traps will be less effective since the throats won't be facing down on bottom. You will still catch some, but it will take a while for them to crawl around to the throats. And then, it seems like you will be running regularly which scare off the searches and cage crawlers every time you pull them. A trap is meant to sit for long periods.

That makes sense. I may end up purchasing some set nets.

I glossed over your sentence where you stated you didn’t/couldn’t leave the traps overnight.

Absolutely in that in case you should use set nets that you lift check frequently throughout the day, and you are going to have much better success in catching any significant amounts of crawfish when water temperature exceeds 70 F and the type of bait/attractant you use is important as well.

I did not but now I do. Thank you. I just knew whenever a trap was completely under we had lots of dead crawfish. But like you say, that was probably due to the oxygen situation.

10-4, that’s what I will look into then.

And yes, it’s on a wma that doesn’t allow them to be left over night.

Technically it’s the spleen, but I believe many refer to pancreas as melt as well.
