First thing my pops fishes 4 days a week most weeks from April to December and I cannot convince him he needs and ice machine, he just won't buy one says they are always broke. He buys 2 to 3 large bags of ice at the marina every trip. Questions...
1) Do you make your own ice blocks in a freezer and how do u get them not to stick to the bucket ?
2) Do u think slo melt actually melts slower than other brands or is it just because it is in bigger chunks.
3) We used to mix drinks with left over snowmelt out the ice best at the end of the day until someone told us it had a chemical in it to make the ice melt slower. Is this true? If so why wouldn't it say, do not consume.

Slo-melt is the tits. I think it's denser than most bagged ice. I think it's probably frozen slower or differently. I always buy chip ice when I can.

Don't think it has any chemicals.

Slo Melt is just ice. There's no chemicals in it. I think it's the chunk size that contributes to its melting rate.

I'd use Big Ice Trays. Each tray makes about 10 pounds of ice. LINK

Its 4"x4" ice cubes.

I'm a kayaker but I have several water bottles that I freeze (block ice). I still use slow melt because it fills space better but the frozen water bottles tremendously increase the time slow melt lasts as well as reduce the amount of slow melt I need.

There's no chemical to make it melt slower. The ice is just demineralized and therefore cleaner, causing it to melt to slower.

Slo melt is block ice that is broken down into chunks. I think they also do something a little extra to get the air out. Less also volume to surface area ration increases exponentially as the chunks get larger. That leads to slower melting. Regular machines make that dimple in the ice and all that does is increase surface area for melting.

Ice machines are worth it to me. Just keep it out of the weather and they will run forever (if quality). Had one on the back porch of the deer camp for as long as I remember and its been replaced once (~15 years). And that is out in the elements.

Poor man's ice maker....

Buy old cheap deepfreezer and freeze 5 gallon buckets with water in them. Once frozen get a bushel basket and place 5 gallon bucket upside down in basket. Take hose run over outside of bucket for a minute or so, bucket will pop off of block of ice. Take ice pick to block of ice make chip ice and you have a basket of ice for cheap.

I did this for years, I now have an ice maker and when it's working it's the tits, I will never not have a working ice maker going forward at my camp.

Slo melt is frozen at a much lower temp and much faster.

We have an ice machine as of last year. Best thing ever. We only run it when we are down. Turn it off when we leave and bag all of the ice and put in freezer. That way we have ice when we get there.

Plastic bins for block ice. Spray with pam every few months.

I use powerade bottle for ice. We have also used small bread loaf pans to make blocks.

I have a under counter ice maker that I use to fill my boat ice chest. Eventually it will pay for itself, probably this year. Never tried slo melt, but I always stick a couple frozen water bottles in there to help keep it colder. The boat ice chest is not very good, mid summer, ice will last until about 2 pm, without anything being frozen. Now that I'm thinking about it, I need to go buy some styrofoam to line the inside for me next trip.

We usually bag ice when we leave the camp and fill the deep freezer (it actually will make your deep freeze run less as well). But we don't turn the ice machine off. It takes over 24 hours for the big bin to fill. Offshore trips usually require about two bins full of ice. So when we get down, throw the bag ice in the boat to "pre-cool", shovel out all the ice you can and let it make as much ice as it can over night. Empty out again in the morning to fill up the boat. You are looking at probably 20-30 bags of ice (I can stand in one of the fish boxes and only my head and shoulders stick out) at $2-$3 bucks a pop. It's definitely worth it.

I keep two liter bottles and gallon milk jugs frozen just for fishing. They last all day with fish on top. Rinse them off and put them back in the freezer after I clean fish.
Should have an ice machine because I hate to buy ice.

Is that all you use? If so, you are doing it wrong. Very wrong. Your fish could be tasting a lot better.
