I have never been and would be launching out of long beach Mississippi. Assuming weather permits is chandeleur island worth traveling to in early March or are more easily accessible inshore areas similar in production this time of year?

Sounds like we are heading the the chandeleur islands!

I'm not sure what you mean by "worth it". As long as you aren't worried burning a tank of gas then it's infinitely worth it. You aren't gauranteed fish out there no matter when you go but I go every opportunity I can get which helps get closer to figuring it all out

well march is generally the most windy month, so there is that.

but other then wind, the weather should be nice and fishing is good right now so go, its never a bad time to go fishing

The answer is always yes. I’d spend every single day of my life out there if I could.

Can you camp out there? What is the attraction, just a lot of fish? Never knew much about them until a buddy started talking about it last weekend.

So LEGALLY you cannot camp on the chandeleur islands. I'm not sure how much of a fine you would receive IF you got caught, which I would think is very unlikely. Not to mention even if you were caught by wildlife and fisheries would they even enforce it lol? But I've heard some people say you can camp on freemason island because of state vs federal park rules, but it's only like 10-30ft wide in some spots and is really sketchy but people do it.

The allure of the island is world class shallow water surf fishing and supposedly one of the most productive grass flats in Louisiana on the backside of the islands. Louisiana fishing is great, and this is one of its best areas.

I bet they would indeed enforce it and you'd be facing some pretty steep fines.

As hurricane said, you can camp on Freemason. It is not part of the chain and you will not be fined for camping on it. Problem is it is narrow and shells. Need to be prepared for that. Make sure to use a 2 anchor set up depending on tide. Weather is right just bring a sleeping pad and sleep under the stars on the boat. March-may there are generally not any bugs to worry about so if weather is good you are golden.

I've been in May
and it was a great day.

Go without expectation and you won't be disappointed.

A bad day on the water is still a good day. Unfortunately when you work full time still and are making middle class wages a $200-$300 trip in supplies and fuel you had to plan for weeks that doesn't produce can still be disappointing. Better than sitting at home, but disappointing none the less haha!

Go with friends. Split fuel bill. Every time I go I see something incredible.

Tough to get a good gauge on the weather out there this time of year. Years ago we stayed overnight on Free and a good storm blew in that night, had to get a ride to our boat that pulled free from the beach anchor. Use a key anchor if at all possible to the beach! Next morning a fairly new 33 Grady was partially sunk after the tide went out and it sat down on a key that came off the beach and laid it on its side! They had to have a salvage company come dewater and right the boat to get it back to land. And it got colddddd that night, luckily we were able to scrounge a little driftwood to stay somewhat warm. But, if the big trout are there, it is well worth it!

I've camped on freemason many times. Be prepared to move the boat in the middle of the night. Multiple boats have been beached or sank due to wind change. Best part of freemason is zero bugs due to it being all shells. main island can have really bad bugs.

April and May will give you a much better chance at catching trout. I’m not saying there aren’t any trout out there right now but it will be a grind for sure. If you have never been before that definitely increases the learning curve. What kind of boat you going in?

I'm gonna try camping on freemason island one day. It definitely sounds fun. Gonna need to make sure I properly anchor the boat though. What is the best anchor type for that. I haven't used an anchor in years haha, with pin anchors/power pole and i pilot I never need one.

2 danforths. One in front and one in back. Point the bow away from the island.

This is how we anchor to any island

I'm gonna look into a Bluetooth tracker that notifies my phone if the boat leaves too far from my phone lol
