I fish mostly below houma, but my dad wants to fish Lake P. Not familiar with the area. All I know is people fish the I-10 and Hwy 11 bridge...Does anyone have tips on pointers on this area??? Thanks in advance.

haven't fished it much but it is hit or miss. you really need to know where to fish.

Sorry, this response doesn't help any.

highway 11 bridge use shrimps, dead or alive.

Last week we were out there for night fishing, caught the first trout of the night, immediately chopped it in half and used half as shark bait on our shark line. Ten minutes later, we had about a 4 foot black tip? shark on the dock with us.
CSB!

I wouldn't advertise that you did this.

how come, is it against the law to catch sharks in the lake?
And once we got it on the dock we were too scared to try and get the hook out so we took a few pics and then cut the line and set his arse free.

Both game fish

ETA: I always thought white trout had a 12" & 25 daily limit also. Dont see that on WLF website though. Is there no limit on white trout?

I used to fish Lake Pontchartrain with a friend. We'd launch just above the LaPlace I-10 exit. Take the exit just above the I-10/I-55 split and drive away from LaPlace for about 1.5 miles. Turn right on what Google Earth says is Peavine road. In about a mile you'll reach the launch. We'd head out to the power line pilings roughly ENE and would tightline dead shrimp that we'd buy from a truck on the way down. The fishing wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either and was a short drive for us. Reds, specs, cats, and a few sheepshead.

For better fishing in Pontchartrain we'd go to the north end of the causeway at sunrise. I think the launch is Fountainbleau SP or something like that. We used to catch some really big trout on chartreuse Deadly Dudleys from 1-3 miles south of the shore along the pilings. Some guys liked to slow troll their bait along the road pilings.

Personally, I prefer the marsh below Houma but Pontchartrain can work for a quick trip.

I've heard trolling ratltraps is the way to go... But I've never fished there... Also, twin span, hwy 11, train bridge and causeway are good. Find clear water. Seabrook is also good. Look for the boats

I grew up on lake pontchartrain and I would suggest starting on the bridges assuming you are targeting specks. Easiest way to fish them is to troll them like a bass fisherman and cast into the bridge piles with plastics. The depth is generally 7-12' so a 1/4 oz jig head is usually enough to get the bottom with no problems. (3/8's if the tide is really rolling through)

You can fish the I-10, Hwy 11, or train tracks. Since it is your first trip i would suggest hitting the nearest one to your launch and work out from there.

If you keep a cast net handy catch some finger mullets, cocahoes and crabs along the lake shore before heading out. Live bait will always work. If you come across any small croakers you can rig it up live and troll it behind you while you work for the specks. You won't get as many bites on the bigger baits but if you do it should be something fun.

Another note, if the current dies the bite typically goes out with it. If the tides changes while you are out i would suggest anchoring under the bridge, turning the radio on, throwing a live mullet and have a beer or two. Once it picks back up you can go about your business.

The marshes around the lake are very good but if you aren't sure where you are going it can be hit and miss. You can typically pickup fish if you can find relatively deep flowing water near or around grass beds. When i switch over to the marsh i like to use popping cork with an artificial shrimp for specks.

Good luck and have fun.

I have fished Lake P for several years. I will tell you this...

IF you can't have someone out there with you to help show you how to fish it, you will likely leave thinking Lake P is the dead sea.

It is very difficult to fish and learn the technique. I have taken people out there before and we caught limits of trout where I caught 49 and they caught one. It can be that challenging.

I would say it's still a bit early for fishing the Causeway, however I haven't been out there yet. Typically trout show up on the Causeway around the World Series again they could be there, but I don't look for themuntil Mid-late October.

They show up in Slidell first, so I would try the bridges, I prefer the train trestles. If that doesn't work, I would try the grass beds along the northshore as there are normally fish there this time of year getting ready to go to the bridges.

You will NEVER learn to fish the lake with a 1/4 oz jig head. Not saying it can't be done, but bring plenty of 3/8oz (my favorite weight) and quite a few 1/2 oz. If you can't feelt he bottom with 3/8 go to 1/2 until you can feel your bait hit the bottom you won't feel a fish hit it.

ok, so what would be the legal way to fish for a shark in the lake?
I plan on going back because it was a lot of fun fighting that thing, but this time id like to do it legally.
Can i use mullets? catfish? if i buy a fish from the store may i use that as bait?
