You hear so many different theories . . . what has been your experience in operating in a shade of gray?

I've done sunflowers and millet with "supplemental" feed in between clipped rows. That kosher with green jeans?

Can’t hunt over field that’s been baited with seed.

I don't know what state you are from but in LA and MS the pamphlet put out by the WLF states dates you can spread winter wheat for ag purposes and the #/acre that can be spread. May want to look into that.

HOWEVER living in the gray on doves is asking for trouble and it's not state trouble it's federal I wouldn't advise to take a chance.

Operating in the gray area is always questionable. Doing so while shooting a shotgun many, many times on/around opening day of dove season is certainly asking for trouble.

How about just doing what you know is fair to your neighbors who are also dove hunting?

That it’s not worth operating in a shade of grey if all I’m doing is sweating my dick off shooting at birds.

As others have said when going into the gray zone you better have your eyes dotted and Ts crossed.
You can look up what is the planting time for winter wheat oats and rye for your area and the prescribed planting rate per acre and plant it via common planting methods (spread and drag).
Here’s where it gets grayier,, let’s say you decide to throw a few extra sacks for good measure and don’t drag it and barely even disc it.
Green jeans writes you a ticket you know what you did and now get to decide how hard you want to fight it. Court dates will get delayed you will spend a shite ton of money and miss work or just pay the ticket.
It can be done but if I was you I would document the entire process, because your neighbors or whoever you don’t invite will turn you in!!

How many acres and how much equipment is available to you?

This is obviously not your first rodeo.

I planted a little over an acre in brown top millet but johnson grass choked out about 1/2 of it. Based on the LA pamphlet I can plant 90-120 lbs per acre in wheat. It's my understanding I could go back in and clip, disk, and replant with wheat prior to the season. However, just make sure wheat is covered prior to opening day.

Gray zone gets you into the green zone (green jeans and money) in my experience. Some big money guys got busted a few years ago around Donaldsonville. They paid some huge fines and almost got some very expensive equipment donated to FedGov.

I know in Georgia, DNR does not wait until opening day to start searching and shutting down for baited fields. Don't count on "as long as it's covered by opening day" logic. There's people who get shut down because there's a deer feeder 1000 yards away.

LINK to fed regulations for what is legal and what is not
Here is a link,,, the problem with the “gray” area is if it’s truly only for a dove field you will have to plan to fight whatever you do.
If you have a food plot or some cattle then the gray area is wider and murkier.

I have no experience dove hunting. Does DWF really have the means to closely monitor fields? It just seems like it’d be so hard for them to truly enforce these rules.

Growing up fishing in Plaquemines Parish, we rarely came across a game warden. And with fishing, the warden can wait near dock. How do game wardens patrol so much field and forest to enforce hunting rules?

I've been checked more dove hunting than any other kind of hunting.
