Buying a boat in Texas with no registration on the trailer today. How do I get this done in Louisiana?

I did that and couldn’t get it registered. Called the office at state police troop hq and had a trooper come out to do the paperwork on it so I could get it registered. He told me there wasn’t anything he could do to make it legal to register.
Call your troop hq if you really want an answer from the people that do it for a living.
Good luck.

It was registered in 2016 but expired. Does that do anything. It’s a trailer for a 18’ express

Be sure the trailer still has a good VIN on it. A lot of times, the labels with the VIN's deteriorate and you can't make out what the number is and the VIN isn't stamped anywhere else. If that happens you'll be SOL

Does the seller have the original invoice from when he bought it, and is the trailer clearly identified as the one on the invoice? If so, you might have a chance. The seller would need to title the trailer in texas and then sell the trailer to you. Then you bring it to louisiana and go through a half day of miserable bullshite to get it titled in louisiana.
If you just buy it and bring it over, you're fricked.
Do a separate bill of sale for the trailer and boat, with at least 2 notarized copies after the current owner titles the trailer in texas and you'll be fine.

I bought my boat in bama, they don't register trailers. I took the bill of sale to the OMV in baton rouge and had the state police inspect it and sign off on it making sure the numbers matched the bill of sale. it was pretty easy

i can't speak for everywhere, but... here in arkansas, i "hear" that you just go to the dmv and tell them you have a homemade boat trailer you need to register and they fix you right up. would that not work other places?
ETA: upon reading some of the replies, i guess there are people that inspect the trailers etc, therefore claiming homemade like you can do here might not work

Does the trailer have a title? Some states title trailers, some don't. I bought one from MS that originally came from Florida. IIRC there was a Florida title but MS didn't require one so the guy I bought it from never got one. He did have the Florida title and signed it over to me. It took me a while to get the paperwork straight and a trip to State Police for them to inspect it, but finally got it registered.
Also, IIRC, La didn't require a title unless it had been titled in another state previously.
Good luck.

BOS and signed over registration may make it happen. Texas doesn’t title boat trailers. They are under the wildlife and fisheries dept and simply have a registration. Unlike La where they are under DMV and are titled with registration.
With the expired registration I’d call DMV and they can tell you if that will work. You are gonna mail it to them to get it transferred.

I just dealt with buying a used boat in texas.
Do yourself a favor and take a day off work, drive over to BR and handle everything in person. Itll be done in a day and no chance of a dumbass losing your original notarized bill of sale.

Forgot to mention seller does not possess the expired registration either. Does that lesson my chances. Sorry for the last minute update. Asking for a buddy that’s not on TD.

Without the paperwork, I couldn’t make it happen. A trooper that I called out to my house to stamp it so I could register it, wouldn’t do it. Told me I shouldn’t have bought it.
I took it BOS notarized to local DMV and they couldn’t get it done either.

You're shite outta luck then. You need documentation that references a legible number affixed to the trailer.
If it were to be a homemade trailer it could be registered here. Shame you dont have receipts for trailer materials like leaf springs and an axle and maybe some material to prove it is homemade. If you had those things you could title and register it here. Maybe you should google how to do that and go ahead and build your own trailer.

I bought a boat from TN and they don't register trailers either. The bill of sale had to include the trailer and the VIN of the trailer. My local PD has someone that inspects the trailers but so does the state. They will come look at it and match it up. Easy as that. The big thing was making sure the trailer and VIN was listed on the bill of sale.

quote:I can confirm that at least LDWF is backed up 8 weeks. Mailed my boat title to them, and got it back 9 weeks later saying the boat title transfer fees went up, so my check wasn't enough
