Panga or Reno skiff

Anyone have expirience with both? I like fishing reds, trout, rigs, ducks, etc. I want an all around, stable, and safe boat for my family, that's a pretty good all around boat for fishing for my son and I. We'll occasionally do islands out of MS, lake P too.

I had an 18 ft reno skiff, that I used from the spillway to Venice, I stayed on the inside, but it was a tough boat
If I was to move back to LA, I'd buy another though maybe a 21 if I had long runs over open water.

I like the Panga. I bought a Well-craft recently, but I gave serious thought to the Panga. The flat bottom on the Reno is going to beat you up on Lake P, or at least be a major turn off for your wife.

BTW, did you find a Panga dealer? When I was looking last year, the closest I found was in Florida. That was my deciding factor.

Did you buy in FL, or did you buy something else since the dealers are all in FL?

Those are nice. There was a really nice one for sale by Chaissons Eye Care in Matthews. Had a Yamaha or Suk on it. I'm not sure. Would be a good family boat, it's a walk thru windshield model.

Father In Law has a 23 or 24’ Reno Skiff setup similar, 250 Yamaha, T top, etc. it mainly gets used outside in Venice. I like it, rides really well, dry, no frills, well built boat. I’ve been with them 10+ miles out.

The Renos have been building boats since the forties. Cool thing is you can get it built like you one but you have to get someone else to outfit it.

They had it built and then did most of the rigging I believe, I really like it, I’d feel more comfortable in the Reno offshore than I would my dads 24’ Nautical Star.

I’ve said it for years, a panga is nearly the perfect boat for Louisiana.
You get the shallow draft for the marshes and the seaworthiness for near offshore excursions.
The only problem for me is the $$$$. Thev’ve become damn expensive.

Worked for Mr Reggie back in high school building his boats and doing repair jobs. He really takes pride in his boats and will not cut any corners. Very good man and have much respect for him and his products.

I have never been in a Panga however fishing in Venice been on a bunch of Reno’s.
Huge fan of Reno a 23’ with fan tails will give you more room by far than a Panga or bay boat. They are big tough boats that ride well. For a family they give you so much room. My camp partner has one we use all the time. Lastly the majority of the river pilots have Reno’s that should say something in itself.

Panga boats are very narrow, they are good while moving but they are not great while sitting still.
A panga is not some mythical perfect boat. They are long and skinny with a high bow. That's why they are very good and cheap to run with low HP. I'm not trying to bash them, they are what they are. I just hear them discussed by people as the perfect end all be all boat, and that simply is not the truth for the majority of fishing we do on the gulf coast.

So true there. Their ride is sweet for a chop offshore. At anchor, they rock bad.

Depends on the type of fishing you want to do.
You are right, there is no perfect boat that can cover every fishing situation but some are better than others.
The thing people need to understand is that pangas were designed to be skiffs. They have a light hull for their size and with their flat hulls, they can get extremely shallow.
However, with their huge bow, they are very seaworthy boats.
Unlike heavier bay boats, they can get very skinny but with that light weight, the hull can pound a bit.
They are narrower boats but many American designs have wider beams.
Yes, I would not like to be offshore drift fishing in a panga.
However, tell me what other type of 18’ skiff can make a 30 mile run in 2-3 seas (yes real 2-3 seas), arrive at the barrier islands and allow you to pole it around in 6” of water?
I don’t know if another skiff capable of doing it.
There is no perfect fishing boat but a panga will be more versatile than most other makes and models.
I can’t speak to Reno skiffs...I see a lot of them around but haven’t spent time on one.

Check out Andros Boats. They have made the panga design an artform.
