I have a 12 ft flatback pirogue that I want to put a trolling motor on. Figured if I tried without asking around it would involve a lot of trial and error. So what lb thrust motor do y'all recommend? What about battery? I was just going to go with 100 AH but would like it to be as light as possible.

I wanted to do the same with a flat back canoe I have. From what I read, you have to register it once you put power to it. Strange law.

From LA WLF website:

quote:

Do I have to register my canoe or kayak?

If you use any type of motor, including an electric one, to propel a canoe or kayak, then you must register it if you use it on the public waters of Louisiana. Otherwise, you are not required to register a canoe or kayak in Louisiana.

Have a 30lb thrust for my flat back powered from 12v battery. Don’t recall what the AH are on the battery.

The 30 lb thrust gets you moving pretty good? I'm asking because I don't want to get a 30 lb and then decide I want a 45 a month later.

Had a 20# Shakespeare on a 12’ wooden pirogue 40+ years ago and I don’t remember it being underpowered.

The biggest difference you'll see in going from a 30lb to a 45lb is in your range with 1 battery or max load you can push at max speed (which will always be around 5mph).

If it's you and a few decoys, a 30lb should be fine and the 24 size battery will work fine too.

So going up to 45lb would give me more range? It wouldn't just burn battery faster?

Newport makes a transom mounted 55 lb thrust hand tiller trolling motor for $200 designed for kayaks and canoes. Should be perfect for what you need.

Battery size depends on how much range you want and how fast you want to get there. The Newport motor gets you moving pretty good at wide open throttle, but your range will be a lot less than using mid-speed

It will burn battery slower because you'll draw less amps to push the boat the same speed.

And in a lot of cases the 45lb and 55lb are identical except for the actual motor so it's even more efficient to go with the 55lb. Of course it's more money too.

Give some thought to where you will use it as well. If there is heavy submerged aquatic vegetation the motor will frustrate you more than it will help you.

If lots of open water they can be nice.
