Getting text that the Pogie boats are killing fish south of the beach in s w La. It’s a wake up call for all conservationists in the South!! Let your legislators know it’s time to push back.

I saw some pictures of all the dead reds on Holly Beach. WLF worried about "breeding stock" being caught by us yet hundreds are dead right now on the beach. Legislators hear their pocket books being lined louder than they hear us raising hell unfortunately.

F the pogie boat. F the politicians

You can apply more pressure by filing a freedom of information act request with every politician down there. You can ask for all emails, texts, phone call records, payment records between the boat operators and themselves. You can also do the same with any associated state agency. They have to respond to the request within 3 days. This is federal law passed during the Obama administration. All agencies funded by the tax payers have to comply. You will get a phone call in about 2 and 3/4 days from someone who is very pissed off that he/she is having to deal with it. They hate those things, but they have to comply. Wear their asses out.
You can Google "freedom of information act request" and it will give you a template. Just make it specific to this situation.

These photos are so disheartening. Unbelievable not just because of the destruction but because those pogies boats bring next to nothing to our economy. According to the pogie boat industry's own numbers, they support about 800 jobs and bring about $500 million in revenues.
But, according to this link, recreational fishing adds almost 2 billion to the economy and 17,000 jobs. That's four times as much as the pogie industries rosey numbers, and 21 times as many jobs.

And according to this link it's about the same.

Yeah, it's completely bonkers that we let the pogie boats do what they do.

Louisiana’s seafood industry generates $1.92 billion in total sales annually and supports about 33,391 jobs. Recreational fishing adds another $1.96 billion in sales and supports nearly 17,000 jobs in the state. In addition to sustaining a large part of the economy, the Mississippi River Delta’s fisheries also support a unique way of life for generations of Louisianans.
And according to this link it's about the same.

Yeah, it's completely bonkers that we let the pogie boats do what they do.

The revenue produced by commercial fishing is miniscule compared to that produced by recreational fishing and the management costs of the latter is far less. The need to keep traditions alive based on nothing more than it being traditional for a small number of people, costs recreational anglers and the people who make money off recreational fishing billions every year. It is CRAZY. I saw a thing recently where a pound of ARS in florida caught recreationally was like $9 to the state after management costs while the same pound of ARS caught commercially as like $1 a pound after management costs. It is outlandish.
The public would never know the difference....they will gladly eat Tilapia and farmed fish for the most part. Most consumers can't tell the difference anyway. It is widely known that the single most common product fraud in the world, including the United States, is passing off a species of fish for another. It is possible because almost no one, even an expert, can tell the difference.
What is espeically galling is the fact that most of the fish caught commercially, like Pogies and kingfish, are not meant for US markets. They are sold overseas. Pogies in particular are important because in many areas of the coastal south they are the chief baitfish for much of the year for all species. They are far more valuable feeding trout and redfish than they are in pill form.

Saw it for myself Saturday afternoon west of Rutherford. Dead pogies, trout and bull redfish everywhere on the beach with more floating in constantly. Pretty crazy to see it in person

Rep Joseph Orgeron has put two bills forth to limit the total allowed catch and force these boats to operate father offshore. Both have made it through the house and were referred to the Senate Natural Resource Comittee. HB 1033 in 2022 and HB 567 this year.
1033 was voted by a vote of 4-3 to be delayed to a later session to be heard, a session where they knew it would not be heard. I am trying to find out who those 4 are. I know one of them is Chairman Robert Hensgens of district 26. He has been the main opponent of these bills.
It so happens that one of the two menhaden processing plants in the state is in his district…..needless to say he did not reply to my email.
Senator Bret Allain, one of the two to reply to emails, was a supporter of these bills is trying to find out the end fate of the bill from this year HB 567 for me.

If anyone is in the vicinity of Mae’s beach and it looks like Holly beach post the pictures and I’ll send them to the Audubon Coastal Wildlife Network who just released 3 rehabbed sea turtles last week at Mae’s beach. They may even have ended up like the redfish.
I also sent the pictures to LWF and they said they had been notified by the Menhaden company and clean up efforts were underway. If Holly beach still looks the same post the pictures and I’ll but LWF some more.
I have been trying to get someone stirred up at KPLC or the American Press, but they don’t seem to care so far.

Its truly mind blowing they don't have the balls to just push them offshore some. They can still operate just fine out there, but keep them at a minimum a mile offshore.

The other thorn on that committee besides Hensgens is Pat Connick. I hope you NO guys can vote that shyster out of office. He’s a real enemy of the business community, and has been a major obstacle for any sort of tort reform over his too-long tenure in the legislature

The House is passing them nearly 75% in favor. Then they get referred to the Senate Resource Committee, where Senator Hensgens (Chairman of the Committee) can single handedly kill them just by not hearing them in the committee.
Anyone know how to make him provide all campaign contributions, and his relationship with Omega proteins. The menhaden plant in his district.

Getting the Connick family out of politics and power is a steep uphill battle.

Connick….. the other senator with a Menhaden plant in his district. Daybrook Fisheries is in Empire.
I think the most frustrating thing is that LWF just told every angler in the state we should not target Bull Redfish, we need to get the breeding stock numbers up.
When I asked them for a comment on the pictures and pointed out that the breeding stock is dead on a beach they sent me the rules and studies that say they can have between 1%and 5% bycatch.
So willing to increase regulation on recreational anglers but don’t lift a finger on the industrial fishing.
