I am looking to get a primitive firearm to expand my deer hunting season in Louisiana. Any suggestions on models, not trying to break the bank, but want a solid performer.

State your hunting in? Each has specific requirements for “primitive”
Budget all in?

This, if it’s allowed in your state.

I bought the H&R Handi rifle in 35 Whelen when it became legal in Louisiana. Money was tight and it was the cheapest option. I've killed a bunch deer with it. But I will say the trigger is pretty crappy on it. I don't know if the more expensive single shots have better triggers or not.
Whatever you go with, IMO the 35 Whelen is the best caliber option.

RED, I have that gun as well in two calibers, I took mine apart and sanded and used a dremel, worked the trigger, catch, spring. helped tremendously.

I have a CVA optima elite 45-70. Has been an excellent rifle.

I have two. 35 Whelen - CVA scout. Henry single shot 350 legend. Henry has nice looking guns if you are into that and it comes in many calibers.

I'd go with .350 Legend if I were buying now. I have a .444 and am paying around $50 a box for ammo. I see the legend for sub $30 all the time.

CVA Scout .35 Whelen
Simmons Sporting Goods in Bastrop has them in stock, along with ammo.

CVA Scout in 350 Legend or 35 Whelen. My favorite ammo is anything loaded with Barnes.
I have a CVA Apex in 35 whelen. My father has the Scout II in 35 Whelen. Both shoot touching bullet holes at 100. His is heavier and kicks less than mine.
Your max range with a 350 Legend will be 150-160ish just like with a 30-30. Recoil is minimal.
Max with the Whelen just depends on the wind and how good you are. I use Barnes 180gr. I am right at 8" low at 300 yds with my rifle sighted in 2" high at 100yds.

350 Legend and 35 Whelen are the same caliber. You mean cartridge.

I would go with the cab 35 Whalen, and put a lazer range finding scope on it to really expand your season and range.
Jk but you could legit shoot 500yd with that set up and be legal primitive in La but my 30-30 with a 2-7 power scope is not.

On a related note, where can I purchase actual blackpowder in LA?
