In the process of buying a tractor for our hunting club. Family member has a 34 hp kubota and pulls a 5 ft bush hog fine. I have a 7' bush hog and was wondering if a bit more HP would be needed to pull 7'? Maybe like a 37 HP or 40 HP. Im looking at getting the same tractor but a bit bigger. Any advice/info is appreciated as I dont know much about this

Try about 50-60 hp if you plan on doing any work with it.

50 I'd say if its thick

We have a 35hp and with a 5' it can get bogged

we have been using a 34 hp with 5 ' hog. in some what thick grass it tends to get bogged. just tired of having to cut things 2 and sometimes 3 times to chop it down

I'd say give it a try...

Do you have an owner's manual for that bush hog? If not, look up the make online and see the recommended PTO hp for your bush hog.

Then look up the PTO hp capability of that kubota tractor.

Honestly, I'd think that a 34 hp tractor could handle a 7' if you take your time with it...but certainly check the specs.

We've put a 15' bush hog on a 65 hp tractor and it had plenty of PTO capacity...the lift struggled but not the hp.

It depends on what you want to do- I have a 35 hp tractor with a 4', and can run over what i want. I have a 6' on a 75 hp tractor for the same. Also have a 10' and 15' for the 75 hp and they will give that tractor a run for it's money in the bad stuff.

NO MORE than 6' and I think that's pushing it. Don't you want to be able to run through anything? Your not in the commerical mowing business so productivity isn't an issue- I vote 37 hp and 5'

We have my grandfathers old 1960's ford 2000 and it pulls our 6' bush hog just fine but you have to be in 1st or 2nd gear.

Why not start by hooking your 7 ft to your family member's 34hp?

They are in separate places but this may be the best way.
I want to be able to run through grown up food plots and not have to chop it a couple times. Guess best bet is to go higher HP and either 5 r 6' hog.

Just curious...how does these smaller kubota tractors compare to other brands...JD, Ford, Kioti etc...

Kubota is the NUMBER ONE under 100 hp tractor made today. Everything John Deere, Massey Ferguson, New Holland and Case IH do in that class is benchmarked off of Kubota.

Kioti is a Korean knockoff and they haven't made a Ford tractor since Fiat bought Ford Ag. in 1996 and solely named it New Holland.

Lemmee put it to you this way- I've worked in the ag. equipment business my whole career. Almost 7 of those years solely in tractor engineering. I'm getting a subcompact to mow my grass, do general chores with a loader, etc.- I'm getting a Kubota and I don't work for them.

I got a kubota L2800. I think it's a 28 horse and I use a 5 foot bush hog and have never had any problems. I also pull a 6 foot finishing mower for my yard and its cuts like a charm.

Get the most hp you can afford. It isn't good for the tractor to be constantly bogging it down pushing things to the limit. I have a 35 for the deer lease and use a 4' it can pull a 5' but like knowing that no matter what it comes into contact it's going to win (with a few exceptions).

Most tractor dealers recommend 5hp per foot for mowing. I think that may be on the low end. Has a lot to do with what speed you want to pull it. We use a flail type mower on cotton stalks. It also does a good job on grass.

As others have mentioned buy as much HP as you can afford. At some point you may want to pull a disk or something else that will require more than what a 7' bush hog will.

I have a Kubota MX5100 4x4 with a loader.I have a 6ft Woods Brush Bull 720x that I use a good bit.Its 79" wide at the widest point. That thing is HEAVY.I have to leave the loader on when using it or the front end gets real light on any incline.I am very pleased with my tractor after 2 yrs of ownership. We use it almost daily and have had ZERO issues out of tractor or cutter.Check them out.I bought mine at Seal Tractor in Woodville,Ms
you need to see what hitch Category your cutter is as well.Mine is a Cat 2 which will not work on most small tractors. If your family has the L3400 Kubota it has a Cat 1 hitch.
