Red dot for turkey gun

Hey y'all, I got a pic in the rail for my 15 year olds 12g and was wondering what red dot would y'all recommend for turkey hunting. I'm not a turkey hunter, but my kid is ate up with it and I don't know too much about red dots on shotguns. What would you OB turkey hunters recommend?

IMO the Holosun 407k is an excellent choice. The only thing I don’t like about it is the warranty.
Depending on the gun, there are some companies that make base plates for some guns that will allow you to mount the red dot lower than you can with a rail.

For shotgun dots I would look at the Holosun circle dots. The larger ring is easier/faster to pick up and more mimics the spread of pellets than just a dot IMO

AT3 ARO has been great for us

IMO, when it comes to turkeys, the less you have cluttering your sight picture, the better. It’s hard enough to pick up a turkeys head periscoping over a ridge, or from behind a tree. I want to be able to see as much as I can while staring down the barrel.
Also, with super tight chokes you want to be precise. Single dot, on the neck. If you’re not using a super tight choke, you really don’t need a red dot.
It’s really just a matter of personal preference, but I know that I’m more likely to put the dot where it needs to be if that’s all I have.

I agree. I still use my bead on the end of the barrel. I don't see the need in all the fancy red dots. Just doesn't make sense to me, but to each his own.

holosun 507C (offers dot, circle and dot/circle) is well reviewed

Is there such a thing as a red dot with mag? With bi focal contact lenses I am having more and more trouble seeing the head and neck like I want and am thinking about a scope this year. Leaning towards the Hawke 1x4 as it appears most of the red dots are no mag....

You definitely don’t need one, but if you have a really tight choke and your POI doesn’t match the POA very well, it’s helpful to have sights or a red dot to help correct that.
The other benefit is being parallax free, so if you forget to get your head all the way down in the moment, or you’ve got a novice shooting, it will help with that.

I don’t think so… but you can get that Hawke in greanleaf! Pretty sweet looking if you need magnification.

Vortex just came out with a red dot specifically for shotguns today.

Dang, I’d have a hard time not buying that if I needed one.
ETA: I’m having a hard time not buying that even though I don’t need it

Agree with this. I put a Burris red dot on my 20g turkey gun. Shot a few birds with it. Found it to be more a hassle than it helping. Turning it on/off. Will it be on after a two hour sit when I need to shoulder? Bumping the sight on limbs/vines/barbed wire (haha).
Shooting straight bead on the 28g. Never had an issue with a bead on any guns shooting turkeys.

Holoson 507c has shake awake, a 50k hour run time, and solar power so yep.

They have prism scopes with a 1, 3, or 5X mag. Primary arms but I dont know if they can mount low enough for a shotgun.

A new mini thermal site came out at shot show that I would love to put on my 1301 and stalk pigs at night with some nasty slugs

Was thinking about a holoson for my 1301 but I didn’t know about that vortex until it was posted in here. Curious to hear your thoughts once you get it mounted up.
