Registering old boat trailer with no papers. Is it even possible in LA?

A couple years ago I bought a 12'x36" aluminum boat from my father-in-law for my son. The boat has been registered in my name but there was no paperwork on the trailer. Unfortunately, it is not a homemade trailer. My son wants to sell it and the 6 hp outboard on it to finance our new boat project.

Here's an old thread on this exact topic:

Do you know any Mississippi residents?
Otherwise, it's a total pain that takes around 9 months

Get someone from Ms to walk into the tax office, tell them they have a homemade trailer with whatever serial number you want, they will give them the size and issue a tag and paper work. Make a bill of sale for a dollar to match the serial number with the tax paperwork from Mississippi.

Is it a manufactured trailer, not home made, has a VIN? What state is it from? Louisiana and Mississippi require trailers to be registered so if it wasn't, that's going to be the problem.
Just went thru this. Took 9 months. Bought a boat last July and got the plate and title last month.
You have to get a Justice of The Peace to get a Judgement of Possession for you. It involves the JotP petitioning the DMV to do a history search on the trailer to ensure there's no hiccups in the title history. After calling her every month for 9 months, the JotP I was dealing with finally gave up waiting on the DMV and issued me the judgement without getting verification from the DMV. Took the judgement paperwork to the DMV and walked out in 20 minutes with a plate and registration and received the title in the mail in a week.

Does the trailer still have a visable VIN on it? If so, you can get it inspected by a police officer, and should be able to apply for title from OMV

Had the same problem. Luckily I friend of mine gave me a lifetime trailer license he had found.

Do you live in a small town? Or know a small town police chief? I went to my local sheriff and told them I built a trailer. It was an older modified factory built trailer that I had on our property. The sheriff came over and stamped it for me. I'm not a criminal, so he trusted I didn't steal it.
If not through him, the trailer was gonna be scrap.

I went through the Justice of the Peace/Judgment of Possession process in Baton Rouge. The process took about a month. I tried to get the state police to sign off on it being a home built as I had a bill of sale for a damaged trailer frame and receipts for an axle, tongue, bunks, tires, lights, hitch, etc. They refused saying there was no way I bent the aluminum I beam frame at home despite having receipts for the rest of the parts. I got nowhere going that route. About 5 years earlier, state police did sign off on a trailer under the same circumstances, so I thought I’d have no issues. I was wrong.
