for whatever reason i dont know... i always run Hoppes down the barrel and rem oil everywhere else... probly comes from the fact that when i was a kid and my pow pow bought me a gun cleaning kit, it had Hoppes for the barrel.. I think Hoppes is a tad more "aciditc, caustic, stronger", i dont know the right word, but it damn sure smells worse...

Rem oil is good to clean but not to lub moving parts near heat. It burns off really fast

Hoppes #9 is a powder solvent (unless I'm confusing it with something else)
Rem oil is just an all around oil
Ballistol and CLP are better for cleaning your guns though.

Have heard that rem oil removes protective coatings like parkerization, but I use it on my guns and have never had a problem so I'm not sure that's true.

Through the years, I've used a number of different oils for gun care. Nevertheless, somehow I've never used Rem Oil. Hoppes #9 is indeed a tried and proven gun cleaning oil for primarily removing powder and small amounts of copper residue. I've always thought of Rem Oil as a lubricator and protector. Nowadays, I mostly use clean, lubricate and protect products like "CLP" and Eezox. I also continue to use a 3:1 mixture of Kroil and Shooter's Choice.
Bapple, I've found your posts to be pretty much spot on, but I MUST take exception w/ your support of Ballistol. I bought one bottle of Ballistol, but only used a few drops because it STUNK so bad. :-) I can't stand it.
One nice thing to an old timer like me is the pleasant smell of Hoppes #9 has a tendency to evoke fond memories of yesteryear!

Am I the only one who uses militec around here? I thought the stuff was suppose to be pretty popular.

I randomly use both plus Barricade and some sewing machine oil

No. 9 is a solvent (cleaner), not a lubricant.
Remoil is a lubricant not a cleaner. It has Teflon now like Break Free.

Been using Breakfree for years on my guns with zero problems.

I was about to post that. Hoppes cleans, rem lubes.

Solvent on the inside, oil on the outside, don't mixem up or your gun will be jammin. And I aint talkin Bob Marley style.
