Savage Axis 270 questions?

Just purchased a Savage Axis 270 for myself. Just got into deer hunting the last couple of years and was borrowing a rifle. I don’t need a big time gun and didn’t want to spend much so I went with the Savage Axis. Can anyone tell me what ammo they have used with this gun that they like and does the job?

Your rifle will like what it likes. I like Nosler Accubond and Ballistic Tip bullets.
If you want to save money, try out some of the cheaper brands and see if they group well. Most any bullet will kill a deer.

I don't have that rifle but I use federal fusion in 7mm-08. It's usually fairly easy to find and super accurate. Just one to try for you.

I shoot a 270 with Leopold sights . Shell i shoot is accubond 140 grain . Been good to me with longs shots. In the woods i love my 35 Whelen, if you hit it , it's down . I feel comfortable to 250 yards with 270 .

I have Savage Axis rifles in several calibers, but not .270, I imagine though, it'll be just like all my other Axis rifles, and will shoot anything that you want to feed it, really well.
Just sight it in with the particular ammo that you intend to use, and make sure that you are getting tight groups with it.

I shoot Barnes TTSX in all my rifles, but I handload. Barnes dos make Vor Tx ammo though.

Deer hunting I assume?
The gun will likely shoot pretty much anything you feed it good enough to hunt with.
I like regular federal blue box best. It generally shoots well and I've never seen a bad result with a deer. Pick either 130 or 150, both will work great. Both are cheap and common
Same goes for other basic cup and core bullets like winchester power point and hornady interlock. All have been around forever, are available at most any Walmart or academy, are cheap, and will kill deer. The only one I dont like is remington core loct, especially 130 gr. I've seen lots of failure to exits with those.
More expensive options that will also work great are Barnes TSX, nosler accubond, nosler partition, lots of boutique loads, the list goes on and on. You only need to shoot these if you're taking the .270 elk hunting or if the gun wont group the cheaper stuff. The premium loads to tend to shoot a little better and definitely will perform better on big heavy game.

Academy has the Nosler ballistic tips for$25. Go that route.

My 13yr old son shoots that same gun. We shoot federal fusion 130 grain bullets out of it. He dropped one at 230 yds last year, his longest kill so far.

I bought a box of Federal Fusion 150 grain when I got the gun yesterday and going to try them out 1st. I won’t be shooting anything at that long of a range. Just doing hunting on my family land and hunting for meat honestly, if I get a nice trophy buck along the way then so be it.

I’ve had great luck with 130 grain Hornady SSTs in my 270.

When I started shooting I bought Remington core lock PSP because they were cheap and I was broke.
I still shoot them because they hammer the heck out of whitetail and hogs. Never had a misfire, dont get round to round or box to box inconsistencies that aren't tolerable. Shoot 1.2" 3 shot groups at 100yrds with a stock savage axis 308.

Great choice. I love my Savage .270 winchester. The Remington 130 grain corelokt is all you need. I've put 150 and 165 grain through it and went back to 130 grain. It's very easy to be dead balls accurate with them, very predictable and fast.

I have a Weatherby 270 and have used nothing but Remington 130 grain core lokt. I harvested 2 deer last year and my son 1 with same caliber gun and ammo. Always $17.99 at Academy or Walmart.
To date haven't had miss fires but my youngest has a 7mm-08 where I have had miss fires with Hornady Whitetail.
