it helps when the guys setting the new rules take money from, and work directly for, the pogey boat lobbyists
Unfortunately that is Louisiana Outdoors MGMT 101. The culture in the state places VERY little value on non income generating qualities of our Natural Resources.

If all of those pogies were still in the water do you think the sharks, dolphins and other predatory species may be targeting pogies instead of speckled trout or redfish?
This is an interesting point that I haven’t considered. I’m not saying the pogey boats aren’t having an impact. I’d just like to see some reasonable arguments that give an idea of what precisely they are doing to the trout population. Everytime people bring up trout limits everyone starts screaming “pogey boats” as if that is universally accepted as the biggest contributor to our dwindling trout numbers.
I believe habitat loss and salinity levels are far and away the biggest factors impacting our trout numbers. This is completely anectodotal but I’d say that accounts for as much as 90% of our issue.
That doesn’t mean we cant try to do every sing thing possible to make sure our great grandkids are still catching trout 75 years from now. If that means tighter rec limits then I’m all for it.

This is bullshite. 15 just isn’t going to look as cool in my Facebook post. I bet I won’t get half as many likes.

I don't mind the proposed limits. I would prefer min of 14".
Compared to other states we have it pretty good. It does piss me off Texas anglers can come here and keep 5-8x more fish than they can in Texas.
Texas (north)- limit-5, 15-25", 1 over 25" a day
Texas (South)- limit-3, 17-23", none over 23"
Miss- limit-15, 15" min
Alabama- limit-6, 15-22", 1 over 22" a day
Fla (GOM)-limit-5, 15-19"
Fla (S. Atlantic)-limit-2, 15-19"
Fla (Atlantic)- limit-5, 15-19"
Georgia- limit-15, 14"
S.C.- limit-10, 14"

There is a reason every other state has a min of at least 14"....yet LA won't make the easiest fix it can make with this species...

at 14" all female trout have spawned once and some twice!
science says at 12" approx 75% of females spawn once.

I don't care about any of the changes but this. frick having to move if you get on a school of nice trout.

Why would you have to move? have fun catching bigger fish then go find some dinks to take home. If you can consistently catch 20”+ then dink fish should be easy to find

I spent a wknd in Cocodrie with friends from Houston. Drove all the way over here to fish and took all the filets Caught better in a wknd than they have for years in TX.
I'm sure they had a blast catching those pencil trout over there.
They have kayaks. No need for a boat to catch a TX limit. Nobody here going to TX to fish, and if they do, it’s for one fish with size.
So which is it? No one comes or they come for the size of the trout they might catch? The trophy fishery in Baffin alone attracts hundreds if not thousands of anglers every year hoping to catch a fish of a lifetime.
You say every time the limit gets lowered? LMAO. Does it get lower than 5? It’s been there for decades, right? Maybe they could pass a law that you have to bring a trout with you and release it before you can catch one.
You sound very well versed in what is going on in Texas, the limit went from 10 to 5 for the lower coast 9 years ago, it went statewide 4 years ago. The lower part of the coast has had a 3 fish limit the last year and half due to the fish killing freeze we had a couple years back, that rule sunset on August 31st of this year and we'll all be back at 5 fish.
You don’t sound like a guy with a several hundred thousand dollar camp and an expensive boat that lives 2.5 hrs from the camp. More power to you driving your truck to the beach and being fulfilled by the sport alone.
You just keep diggingYou have no clue what I have invested but if it is a dick measuring contest you want I'll be happy to whip mine out. I live 2.5 hours from Rockport along the Gaudalupe River, in Rockport I have a waterfront home, between in the barn and on the lifts there is my Simmons Custom Go Fast Boat for tournament fishing, my Haynie Tower Boat for scouting, my Glacier Bay Offshore Cat, and finally my Majek RFL that we use for duck hunting and gigging. Go ahead and try put a dollar figure on all of the hours of my time I donate every year being on advisory committees for TPWD or state boards of conservation groups.
Im not hating on you and your level of investment. But not everyone is satisfied by just fishing. I like catching more than fishing, and I actually enjoy cleaning fish as much as eating them.
I never said we don't eat fish, we eat plenty, having said that we have killed two trout since the freeze in February 2021. I prefer flounder and snapper for the table.
I enjoy freshwater fishing ponds the way you enjoy saltwater. I never keep any freshwater fish. I also invest next to nothing fishing local ponds.

I apologize for getting off topic but I’m coming fishing with you lol. I love Rockport. Caught what was my pb trout at the time with Jay Watkins not 3 minutes from whatever launch we were at down there.
Posted on 8/4/23 at 11:36 am to hall59tiger
Jay is a very close family friend, we fish together a lot. I caught my PB (just shy of 10lbs) with him down in Mansfield several years ago.

He’s an elite guide and person. Most guides I go with get turn out to be cranky fellas. He’s good at getting you on big fish and teaching you too much to remember at the same time.

Best speckled trout season in years on both sides of the state Decreased numbers my arse. And out of 243 trout caught in 4 trips by a total of 12 anglers, only 1 trout was caught on live bait

Unfortunately the state senate officials will turn a blind eye again.
There was a clip recently of a guy arguing against the oil companies and he threw out a pretty thought provoking statement "There are no lobbies for the benefit of Louisiana".

Long needed change. The game hogs are gonna hate it.

One boat...on one trip...will kill more redfish, trout and flounder than I will in my entire lifetime.
The LDWF once made a statement that recreational fishermen were not the main cause of decreasing populations but should be willing to do all they can (support limit changes) to help out. The least they could do is want the same from the boats raping our coasts.

I wish I still had the pics from a few years ago of the piles of trout they were killing (by being in areas they weren't supposed to be anyway). It's absurd.
