Going to be heading out of Grand Isle to some rigs for the first time in a couple of weeks. What type of tackle is recommended for red snapper fishing? Thank in advance.

Rod and reels or line, hooks, weights, lures?

Sabiki rig to catch the biggest hard tail you can catch.
8oz egg weight and 3ft of 200pound moon leader circle hook sitting on 200pound power pro on a penn 113 sitting on a broom stick rod.

Was out there this past Sunday. We used 12oz sinkers, leader, then circle hook below that.

Big knife on standby to cut off all the damn sharks. Sirius weather to dodge all the storms and cuss out rob perillo. Comfy bean bags for the arse whipping you'll take on the way back in. Earplugs for the loud arse rigs. Camera for pictures of all the idiots out there in 18' aluminum boats. Rod, reel, 12oz weights and circle hooks to try to catch snappers. Free line circle hook on standby incase you see a lemon fish.

Yes, mostly interested in weight sizes, leader test, line test, hook size.
Some research that I had done suggested that 65 test line, 8 oz egg sinker, 100 lb fluorocarbon leader, 7/0 circle hook would suffice.

I’m doing my first snapper trip in years. I’m debating on buying me a big spinning reel set up for the trip because I hate those deep sea rigs they use.

Carolina rig to a 8/0 - 11/0 circle hook. 6-16oz sinker depending on current.

Live bait for snapper seems like overkill to me. Those things will eat anything. I normally just grab a flat of frozen pogies or bait squids for snapper.

you can catch snapper on anything. our dedicated snapper rigs have 60-80# braid, egg sinker 6-16oz (depending on current, we also fish deeper 160-300ft) carolina rig style, with 80# braid leader withe the 8-10 ought hooks like i said.
you CAN catch with lighter tackle than that. so if you dont have that heavy stuff and dont want to up your brain to 80#, you can use 30-50... but you are more likely to break off on the structure. and a preventative measure i would at least go to academy and get a spool of 80# Ande mono for the leaders. this will provide you with some abrasion resistance if you get caught up.

We caught them on chunks of mackerel and squid. Both froze. They would bite anything.

I have never fished for them in La. so it is always interesting to me to read what people use. In Fl. I use my wacky worm rig and no weight at all

quote:they do, but you find the small fish are more aggressive and they will bit first. ways to stop that is bigger live bait, so the hard tails to work, but i have found pin fish work better. Late in the season you need to present something that they havent seen every weekend.
They would bite anything.
Also the rigs get hit hard because anyone and their grandma can see where to fish... you want to up your game, find old rigs that have been cut, or pipe line crossings, or wellheads, or wrecks. Weeds out the weekender spot.
quote:reminds me of the time we were fishing a rig and a old guy out of GI pulled up in a 36-42 yellowfin..... and proceed to watch us fill our boat with snapper and grouper. After about 30 mins of use catching and him not, he asked what we were fishing with.... We said live bait, and he responded "OOhhh all i got is squid" and he left.

You can catch them everywhere. I caught some in 40' last weekend

<100' you can catch but will be smaller
we look for 150-200+ structure.
the yellowedge in that pic was at 470'

I caught some on a piece of beef jerky I found in my truck tied to a piece of shoe string off of a bridge.

I'm no expert snapper fisherman. The bigger fish were biting on the bigger chunks of bait for sure. I did hear that artificial jigs or something might produce larger fish.
