Transporting a jon boat via SUV

I need to transport a jon boat 6 hours south with a suburban. I don’t have access to a trailer. One way trip and dropping the boat off. What are my best options?
1. Strapped to the top cargo rails? Boat up or down? Have traveled with my pirogue this way without issue. Boat is 50 lbs heavier than my pirogue.
2. Take seats out and put it inside as much as possible and use a tailgate extender on the hitch. Travel with tailgate open but tied down as much as it can be.
3. Any other idea?

Don’t want to buy a trailer for a one time trip to camp where I have a truck

If you have a full sized SUV, lay the seats down and put it in thr back as far as you can, and strap it down. Shouldnt stick out too much. Flag the back end of the boat sticking out the back.

Either way will work. I’ve travelled 300 miles one way with a big arse Diablo paddlesports kayak ratchet strapped on a Tahoe roof rack.
Turn that jonboat bottom up and strap it down....and for piece of mind put a rope/strap through the front handle and attach it to your front bumper. That way you can see if it starts to move (it won’t though). Your arse will still be puckered until you get there.
Pro tip....put a couple of the carpeted bathroom mats (that have a rubber bottom) on the edge of the roof where you put the boat up against the suburban will prevent scratches. Edit...this is when you are loading and unloading.

Thanks. I’ve made 400 mike one way trips similar to what you mentioned with a paddle board up there and pucker factor finally subsided after doing it enough. Still tug and check in it every time we stop.
Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I checked mine many times too and pretty much resigned to the fact that if it came loose and flew off, as long as it didn’t stay in the road or hit somebodies car - I was just gonna keep on trucking.
I would’ve put it inside like Homey said but my Tahoe was full as a tick.

Just a suggestion. You can rent a U haul trailer for about $60-80. No issues with it flying off or scratching your vehicle. Drop it off at the nearest U haul location when your done.

Rent a utility trailer

Just tie it to your hitch with a rope and drag it there on the road. Purchase a can of flex seal and coat it dowm when you get there and you are good to go.

I'm feeling inspired... what color is said suburban? How many white cans are going to be involved? Do you have any stickers on your back window? 2 lane roads or interstate? Does someone have a temper? How about a family dog?

My grandpa and dad fished for years out of a 12 foot jonboat and a dodge cargo van. They put it on the roof and engine and seats in back. Not rails just straight on the roof.

Roof and some bingo cords to hold it down should work.
