Same reason fleas and ticks don't bite them anymore.

Im assuming by buzzard you mean what’s commonly known as buzzards - turkey vultures or black vultures - and not buzzard hawks.

Given the choice vultures actually prefer to eat herbivores. If they have enough herbivore meat to eat in an area they will typically pass on carnivores/omnivores.

Another misconception is that they like rotted meat. Vultures actually like fresher meat - usually only a couple of days old and once it’s rotted they won’t really touch it.

So it’s not that they won’t eat a dog it’s just that they prefer not to.

I have seen them drag a dead pit bull out of the bushes and go to town on it.

Because dogs are nasty evidently.

A starving buzzard will walk over 6 dead dogs to fight over the last speck of a possum carcass.

Thanks for this.

Do they eat road kill gators? Seems like I see the carcasses just sitting for awhile with little to no action.

guess it depends on whats available/what theyre used to. I feed them coons all the time, but ive seen wild boars on the side of the road sit there for weeks untouched.

Many scavengers including birds and mammals won’t eat dead beaches marine mammals. They just sit on the beach getting all bloated until some of them literally explode.

In my experience they also don't eat dead Javalenas. I've shot a few on my property and they haven't touched them. They smell like skunks, not sure if that has something to do with it.

That's a myth buzzards enjoy a dead dog second only to a possum

Actually here in SW Louisiana black vultures & turkey Vultures (buzzards) WILL NOT EAT a dog that's been killed along the road. They will clean up the carcasses by eating any other animal killed along the road but not dog. You have to drag them off the road to get rid of them.
