What happened with that notion when it was a matter of life and death to defeat the second coming of Hitler, i.e. “if you never vote again, just vote this one time….we’re in an existential crisis” essentially being what they were selling to the public? If their former “talent” at circling the wagons didn’t occur this past election, what will vivify them to do so post-Trump?

Probably...but this election proved their 'base' is not enough. They have to find a candidate (and policies) that will swing votes back their way. AOC or Bernie will not be able to do that. That is why Obama and his ilk were so dead set against Bernie, even though they probably loved his policies.

Wisconsin and Michigan will have to flip 2 of the 3 Democrat controlled branches of government in those states between now and then. Doesn’t look promising.
