US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made significant comments about the ongoing tariff tensions with China at a closed-door investor summit on Tuesday in Washington.

According to Bloomberg, Bessent told attendees that the standoff with China -- which he said was essentially an embargo -- is unsustainable and that he expects it to de-escalate.

He said that while formal negotiations haven't commenced, a deal remains possible.

Risk assets have rallied on this, with the S&P 500 rallying 35 points to a session high. It must be nice to be part of the club.

well it begs the question of what kind of de-escalation are we talking about here, and who is conceding to who/bending the knee

BBC on Sirius is openly pulling for China to save Europe and help them keep their markets protected from US exports and our market open to them.

“Can we just keep agreeing to talk and getting some reprieve for at least a year or more than hope the political reality in the US changes?”

“How do we stop the US from breaking China? From forcing us to choose them over China?”

Just listened now.

I listen to and read European media everyday.

There has been a marked change over the past few weeks, a notable movement.

They are scared to death.

Apparently this was leaked from a closed door meeting. Bessent didn’t say it to public.

However, I’m sure he knew that his words might be leaked.

In fact, he was probably counting on it.

The question, to what end?

Tread carefully on this upsurge. Bissent said the timeframe to a deal with China is 2-3yrs. That tidbit is not getting much airtime yet.
