Travel nurse pay - August numbers showed a weekly average rate of over $2.5K, compared to a December 2019 average weekly pay of just over $1K.

During the pandemic, there have been both state and federal moves towards enacting legislation specifically aimed towards more regulation for staffing agencies and limiting travel nurse pay rates.

Thoughts? Some states have already begun capping wages paid through staffing agencies. IMO bedside nursing is grueling work and I feel they deserve to get paid whatever the market is offering.

Travel pay is there because people will pay it.

Unless there is a nationwide cap, any state that has a cap on pay is just going to see their headcount numbers drop as those nurses head elsewhere.

The Federal money dumped in the health system created this (in part). We’ve had a nursing shortage for years and the pandemic just highlighted it.

Eh. There is some degree of gouging going on by agency. We don’t let Lowe’s charge $10,000 for a generator during a hurricane.

Scammers is overstating it.

I find that the people who do travel are either ones with no roots who want to make money or who are of questionable quality.

Being a travel nurse covers up a lot of issues with the latter because they can just take another posting.

This has been going on for FAR longer than the current shortage.

I was hearing about the money in travel nursing probably 15 years ago from a coworker who was going through nursing school at the time.

She finished up long enough ago to have worked at the Earl and quit the profession before the Earl shut down, so that was quite a while ago.

Anyone who supports capping a person's pay is not a conservative. It is directly capitalism, supply and demand.

Can't believe people are even discussing this. Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos needs capped before nurses do.

There’s already a nursing shortage. Caps on pay will only make it worse and ultimately lead to the system being even more overburdened, so it will fail and they can finally bring in socialized medicine.

If these nurses are willing to travel and be compensated for it when no one else will work, why is it an issue?

let the market decide, get govt the hell out of industry

All the govt does it frick things up. The amount of unintended consequences that would spiral from these ideas are never considered until it’s too late

History has proven even well intentioned govt intervention has disastrous consequences and should be avoided AT ALL COST. But some people never learn and are desperate for daddy govt to save them from things they don’t like

I am usually not one for capping anything and letting free markets reign but healthcare is not a free market. It, like tuition cost, did not go up until the Government got involved via medicare then insurance compounded the problem.

Pretty much.

If a facility has a ton of travel nurses and not a lot of permanent staff, that is often a sign that the facility has some serious problems with the workload given to the permanent staff.

If you burn people out, they quit at worst or have no loyalty at best and will look for a better landing spot.

Are you saying healthcare is a right and that it's okay to cap someone's labor?

Immoral and seemingly illegal.

You didn’t answer the question.

Capping nurse pay isn’t the answer. But simplistic, binary approaches to the issue isn’t the answer either.

Are you for or against price gouging laws?

Would rather cap teachers' pay. At least the nurses are working during Covid without whining incessantly and shutting down the hospitals.

While I'm not in favor of capping someone's earnings, what they are doing is effectively price gouging and possibly colluding to keep the prices high. Those two pieces merit investigation.
