Iran contra Affair opinions

This happened before I was born but I've gone down the rabbit hole on it. What is everyone's opinions on it that was old enough to live through it? Taking the cocaine epidemic out of it but did most people at the time think it was wrong to support the Contras with the arms profits from Iran? What were the feelings on Oliver North during the hearings? I've watch clips from the hearings and he seems like he was pretty truthful and forthcoming.

it was bad but I think HW and Reagan were honest when they plead ignorance

I was a child and have no memory of this being discussed by the adults back then.
Also interested in thoughts and responses from those that were alive and aware back then.

Dems tried to make it Reagan’s Watergate.

Oliver North is a great patriot.
Early in my federal career, I had an inmate who was a CIA operative that was involved in the drug part of the operation. He was granted a sentence reduction immediately after Clinton took office. I escorted him out of the institution where he was picked up by a limousine.
Like everything in politics, the scandal was a legitimate CIA that the democrats got win of and tried to benefit politically from it.

It's crazy how everything is so intertwined. The cocaine trade in the us that was operated out of Arkansas by none other than Bill Clinton.

I was very small and remember the hearings interrupting the Price is Right.
My parents spoke about it - they thought old man Bush knew what was going on

Reagan yes, because he had already developed significant Alzhiemer's and genuinely did not remember.

The Tom Cruz movie about Barry Seals would leave one to believe that Bill Clinton and HW were involved. Guns down, and drugs back up. Making money while stopping the spread of communism.

It’s mere child’s play compared to how the feds operate now.

They should figure out a way for us to learn about stuff that happened before we were born.

Reagan had to stay arms length away, for political reasons. Bush was the tip of the spear, but Bill Barr managed the whole operation. Oliver North was in the operational loop, but he was the low man on the totem pole in the DC loop, so he was the one to take the fall. As far as Bill Clinton, I’d say he was paid to look the other way. A lot of the infrastructure of the operation was in Arkansas and anytime an investigation got going in or around Mena, it always hit a wall. Read the book “Compromised”. It’s a good read about the inner workings of the whole ordeal.

Only thing you need to know about Iran - Contra was Fawn Hall made a teenage rebel put his hands under the covers a time or two.
Beat witness ever.

Reagan wanted to aid the Contras, but a Democratic Congress passed the Boland Amendments to stop him, thus helping their fellow Communists, the Sandanistas.
Iran-Contra was an end run around Congress.

Reagan was trying to take down Soviet backed Sandinistas who were running amuck down there. Dems in Congress, being sympathizers to the Soviet cause, didn't want to fund any such operation. So Reagan did it clandestinely.
They tried to make it some big scandal that it wasn't. Reagan, being the CIC, had authority to run clandestine ops down there.

LINK i sent this article to my cousin and asked him if he knew this article to be true. he worked for the government (red river army depot) auditing weapons. he didn't but always wondered why he was told at camp stanley that he couldn't audit certain areas.

Been too long long ago, I don't remember the detail nor my feelings at the time. I do remember it being distastful as I was a big Reagan fan and unlike many, I didn't care too much for Oliver North but I suppose he was following orders but way too glad to do it.
