According to the story, it sounds like this person was bitten during/after the raid to take him.... not beforehand as a pre-cursor to raid the Longo's home.

So, twenty years ago the NYPD “rescued” a fully grown, 3 year old, 425 lb male Bengal Tiger from a five room apartment in Harlem where it had been living for a couple of years as a pet. Ming the Tiger lived on at a wild animal rescue center in another state until he rang down the final curtain and joined the choir invisible at a ripe old feline age. Seems like peanut’s death sentence could have been commuted.
