But not for Med School - The court ruled that specific racial quotas, such as the 16 out of 100 seats set aside for minority students by the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, were impermissible.

Because death and lawsuits...muh, bad.

I notice you didn't point out that Asians have a worse acceptance rates across the board when compared to whites in the 3.8-4.0 GPA range.

Are you going to champion the plight of the Asians out there who are being discriminated against so White people can take their spots?

It's more than race-identification that goes into the decision making for students to become accepted. It's a combination of many factors. Nice try on the statistical manipulation, though.

There is a super liberal professor in the department (he's even been the target of a couple of campus reform org videos) and he's one of the main guys that makes the decisions for acceptance into the graduate program ... he once told me that Asians have an uncanny ability to score very high on standardized test, but that doesn't seem to make them good students.

Just my anecdotal two cents. It struck me as quite odd, though, that someone of his political leanings would say something like that.

Couldn't the exact counter argument be made that Latinos and Blacks may somehow score lower on tests and that doesn't necessarily make them worse students?


Granted I think that argument is stupid, but so it looking only at MCAT scores for med school admissions too. I just wanted OP to admit that his logic showed there was rampant discrimination against Asians.

This is the result of many initiatives from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to address the "Underrepresented in Medicine " (URM). 4 groups were identified as underrepresented in the medical field based on their percentage of the US population. They were African American, Hispanic (Mexican Americans), Native Americans (American Indians, Native Alaskans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders), mainland Puerto Rican's. Asians are represented in medicine at a higher rate than their percentage of the population. MCAT score averages have always been lower for these groups. The new focus is "holistic review" and "competency based" admissions where they claim to look for exceptional qualities apart from test scores...such as leadership, unique experiences, etc. The problem with those who can't score well on standardized tests is getting licensed because they are standardized tests as well. So med schools spend a lot of resources helping these students try to improve their scores through summer programs focusing on MCAT prep and educational enrichment.

And Asians have started suing schools over their low acceptance rates. Schools balancing out minority acceptance...evenly - equal amount asians, blacks, latinos, etc. Despite the fact Asians totally kick their arse in H.S. resumes and test scores.
