I wouldn’t be so focused on the looking away as to the general lack of attention to the motorcade or security elsewhere given by the NG.

They swore an oath to protect our nation from both foreign enemies and domestic enemies such as Joe Biden. Only turning their backs is dereliction.

I would image it to be customary, perhaps they did, then about faced after passing? We don't know. I was a Marine, dont know what the army does. But I'd suggest it would be mandatory and customary to turn when president passes by.

It’s not normal. If you ever served in the military you know attention on deck when a Lt Col CO walks in the room, much less the president.

Unless a CO was giving them a brief. Then it’s on the CO. Yeah, it’s not normal, but it looked like they were in formation getting a briefing.
