Steven Van Zandt: ‘Bruce Springsteen backing the Democrats lost us half our audience’

quote:
“I happened to be in Nashville one day talking to this cat named Tony Brown, who was Elvis’s piano player and ended up starting record companies — a big deal. He said the last three people he produced — George Jones, the Mavericks, slightly off stuff — couldn’t get on country radio. They won’t play Johnny Cash any more! I thought, ‘It’s time for a new format.’” Heartland radio shunning the Man in Black for his leftism speaks to the polarisation of America. “Yeah, it does, like when the Dixie Chicks criticised George Bush. It’s sad.”
In the 20 years since he founded Outlaw Country, American politics has become greatly more divided, with senior Republicans talking openly of the possibility of civil war. “Those things used to sound like hyperbole,” Van Zandt says with a sigh. “Not any more.” Is Springsteen, supposedly the ultimate heartland rocker, unable to play in certain places now? “Well, our audience is much less mixed than it was, politically. When Bruce got vocal behind the Democrats, we probably lost half the audience. There’s nowhere we can’t do business but some places, yeah, they feel a bit like enemy territory. We’re ten times bigger in Europe. We might play six stadiums in America and sixty in Europe.”

True, but I liked him in the Sopranos.

Van Zant himself is an ultra-leftist... he's not saying it's sad that Bruce is a Leftist, he's saying it's sad that half the audience won't listen to them because of that,,,

Little Steven is pretty woke, himself, isn't he?

I went to see him perform in Orlando some years ago and he and his band absolutely sucked. They were like a high school garage band playing. Sloppy and very unrehearsed. Springsteen just stood there and screamed into his microphone.
He did preach his woke politics as well.

I heard a stat lately that roughly half of Americans feel there will be a civil war in the next 10 years.
20 years ago that would have been 5% and 40 year ago 1%.
Interesting days.

I was a huge fan of Little Stevens Underground Garage until SVZ said he wants to kill me

Sucks...we had this debate on the Music Board
I love Bruce's earlier work....he really used to mean something to working class Americans....he was a cultural phenomenon in his day and Bruce really represented the working class and his message resonated around the country...not just in the NorthEast or New Jersey.....and he was an amazing live performer
But after his success he started hanging out with Obama, Spielberg, and Hanks and really lost the plot and lost that connection with his audience. He was never a hardcore conservative going back to when told Reagan to stop playing "Born In The USA" .... he used to be a real populist......success kind of ruined Bruce.

That’s why they lost half their audience.
If you start preaching when people are there to be entertained, don’t be surprised when it turns people off.

Poor Little Steven. Bruce writes and sings about “American” ideals, yet openly craps on 1/2 his audience through his support for leftists.

He’s not even related to them. He’s from MA. The real van zandts are from Florida.
This is just a 73 year old pussy.

Didn't Mellencamp freak out recently and storm off stage after getting booed for preaching his Dem politics?
