The duo spent several days in a detention facility before being deported, despite holding valid travel documents and having no prior infractions. The teens hadn't booked accommodations for their full stay in Hawaii, which raised concerns for Customs and Border Protection—even though both had valid travel authorizations through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

It’s more fun if you let them FA a little before they FO.

Trump is going to kill international tourism to the US. I think 2026 travel international numbers will be down 50% as compared to 2024.

And what are we meaning by "teens"? Minors or almost 20yr olds?

Because he’s enforcing laws that have been in the books?

If that kills tourism, then so be it.

When I travel to foreign countries, I don’t break their laws and demand that the authorities look the other way. Call me crazy.

A link would probably show the full details instead of the handpicked ones he used to make his point.

The German Foreign Office later reminded travelers that ESTA approval does not guarantee entry to the U.S. — a decision always left to border officials at the point of arrival.

The ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) allows citizens of certain countries to travel to the U.S. for short stays without a visa. However, ESTA approval permits travel to a U.S. port of entry, where border officials have the final say on whether to grant entry.

These travelers were denied entry after attempting to enter the U.S. under false pretenses. One used a Visitor visa, the other the Visa Waiver Program," CBP Assistant Commissioner Hilton Beckham said in a statement. "Both claimed they were touring California but later admitted they intended to work – something strictly prohibited under U.S. immigration laws for these visas."

Here's the story:

A pair of German teenagers was turned away at the border in Honolulu last month because they were unable to present lodging confirmation to Customs and Border Protection officers.

Although both travelers had approval to travel to the U.S. from the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), that does not guarantee entry into the country.
