That distinction might make a difference if these activists had, at any point, demanded Hamas release its prisoners and stop raping women and killing children.
At the end of the day progressives support Hamas' behavior for the same reason they supported BLM riots. They think the only way the poor and impoverished can defeat the system that's keeping them like that is violence.
They're Communists, plain and simple. And most will even admit it.
Israel = rich; therefore evil.
Palestine = poor; therefore good.
It's that simple.

The fact that Harvard is a private university and they’re not controlling that situation more with security says a lot.

This doesn't mean much when you realize there was one election 19 years ago. Hamas sucks, but there is a significant amount of people in Gaza that weren't even old enough to vote at that time. This argument is an attempt to justify the killing of civilians, nothing more.
