The Trump administration is asking Congress to eliminate funding for Head Start, a move that would cut early education for more than half a million of the nation’s neediest children and child care for their families.

The proposal is tucked in a 64-page internal draft budget document obtained by The Associated Press that seeks deep cuts at the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees Head Start. It is still in a highly preliminary phase as the White House prepares to send Congress its budget request for the 2026 fiscal year.

It is not clear if the proposed cuts will be accepted by lawmakers. While Congress often ignores a president’s budget request, the proposed elimination of Head Start highlights the administration’s priorities as President Donald Trump seeks to overhaul education in the United States.

you shouldn't. The government exists to punish common Americans and increase the wealth of the elite. This aligns with the interests of the White House and MAGA.

I know you're going to ignore this, but there's no way out of this mess without painful cuts.

That goes for programs that both the left and the right support, but no one wants to hear that.

It’s a pre-k program for low income family’s children, to give them a “head start”

Some programs more or less pay for themselves in the long run

This doesn't seem to be a smart or thoughtful cut

That's what is claims to be, but does it actually do anything at all? Lefties question absolutely nothing about government spending. There's not a single program they'd refuse.

None of this administration's moves in any capacity have been smart or thoughtful. They just shoot from the hip and tweet bullshite.

Are you suggesting Head Start pays for itself?

If this is true, it was definitely put in the budget cuts by a GOPe member, in an attempt to through the midterms.
Stop voting GOPe.

A growing body of research has shown consistent evidence for Head Start’s differential effectiveness across a number of individual and family characteristics, including stronger impacts for children from families facing high levels of socioeconomic adversity (Cooper & Lanza, 2014; Lee, 2011), dual language learners (Bloom & Weiland, 2015; Puma et al., 2010a), and children with low levels of baseline skills (Lee, 2011; Puma et al., 2010a).

There is at least a possibility

If it can help the neediest people have a chance at life it likely has some unseen crime prevention aspect of it

It's certainly possible that the societal cost of not funding it is greater than funding it
