Was the 2006 USMNT the best team we ever had?

Somewhat of a spin off of the 2002 thread. This was one of the only times we didn’t get out of group play. But after doing some research USA was ranked #5 in the world, their highest ranking ever, and ended up being in what may have been the toughest group in World Cup history.
#2 Czech Republic
#5 USA
#13 Italy
# 48 Ghana
Italy and Ghana went on to advance with Italy winning it all. What was it like going into that cup and not even advancing out the group? Was there a feeling we could win it all?
I was in college in 2010 and me and my roommate woke up early (I think it was 8am) to watch the Algeria match smoking bowls and saw the Donavan goal. Went on to have the time of our life in 2014 at the varsity watching the brooks goal and the Portugal tie to advance our the group of death and give Belgium a hell of a fight
Was at the varsity for Portugal and turned to my hardcore soccer fan buddy and asked “why the frick do we keep shooting from so far out?!” As soon as jermaine Jones buried one from deep and he goes “THATS WHY!!” And we launched our beers
good times

I remember being really excited then having my optimism crushed by Jan Koller dicking over Eddie Pope and Oguchi Onyewu within like 10 minutes

I think this is the most talented midfield in us history. This team is held back by bad coaching and lack of a finisher.

2006 may have been the most boring world cup ever for watching the USMNT. I was at a wedding reception during one of the games and they had a TV on in the kitchen where several guys were watching. It was so damn frustrating to watch those games.

That Italy-US game was awesome.

The US got absolutely fricked on seeding. The US should have been a Pot 1 team if they used the simple seeding method they use now based only on FIFA ranking.
Up through 2006 they used some bullshite seeding method that used your results at the last three world cups. The US was seeded 9th.

That was the most disappointing WC for sure. We had really high expectations. Played well in previous WC and came in with the highest ranking in our history. We were in a tough group yes but We played like shite in all 3 group matches.
