Anyone using cox panoramic cable modem/router combo?

A cox installer setup a cox panoramic device at my house this weekend. I asked him to replace it with a simple modem b/c I use my own google wifi router. He played dumb and said he wasn't issued a plain modem so that I am basically stuck with it. My internet is also not working due to a separate issue in the area so I can't even tell if I can simply disable the router or test it's functionality. However, the device is large and I prefer the small modem over this big thing.
Is this standard practice by cox now? Does anyone know if I an simply bypass the router and use my own?

You need a modem if you want to use Google wifi. You can buy a modem from a store or rent one from Cox. I would buy a modem from Amazon for 50 bucks and return the panoramic one that way you dont pay monthly for it.

I have a Cisco Cable Modem that I believe is docsis 3.0. It's only 2-3 years old. I handed it to him and asked him to link it to my account and he came up with excuses on why he couldn't. He said it was probably 3.0 and they won't use that anymore. I had to go with 3.1 and he wouldn't even check to see which version I had to be sure. It was just kind of weird how he was insisting I use the modem/router they sent as if that was my only option.

You can bypass, just plug it into your Google WiFi. I returned my panoramic and bought a WiFi. Grab a Motorola surfboard modem from somewhere online like Amazon.

Buy your own compatable modem or go into your settings for that one and turn it into bridge mode? That will make it act as a modem only and you can use your own WiFi router.

He was, predictably, either completely clueless or lying to you. A DOCSIS 3.0 modem should be sufficient for any tier of service short of Gigablast and is the minimum requirement for NEW customers. DOCSIS 2.0 modems are still currently supported for existing customers who have no changes to their services, but an upgrade to at least 3.0 is required upon any service change. Also, the FCC prohibits cable providers from requiring you to use their equipment. Instead of Cox's device, I am currently running an Arris Surfboard to connect to Cox's networks and have that feeding into an ASUS router to provide wired and wireless connections to all my devices.
You buy your modem (or in your case, pick it up off the coffee table), you call Cox and tell them you want to provision your modem (essentially telling their systems your modem exists so that they'll recognize it and allow it access), you give them the modem's MAC address that's printed on the label, and you should be up and running. Plug the WAN port on the router into the outbound port on the modem and off you go. Hell, the provisioning process may even be automated these days. Don't forget to return Cox's equipment to them and make sure the counter critter removes the rental charge from your bill.
You should be aware that you will get precisely ZERO technical support from Cox if you don't use their equipment, though. If you have any problems, you'll either need to know what to do or know someone who does and likes you enough to do networking troubleshooting for you.

They more than likely get little bonuses for every one of those things they install, which would explain his not wanting to help you use your own stuff

You should just be able to plug your router into the modem that he installed and it should work .. That's all i did. I just ignore the panoramic wifi. I just use the Linksys router that i have plug directly into the modem/router provided by cox

Another tech had to come out for another issue and he swapped out the panoramic device for my docsis 3.0 modem. However, they said I couldn't get the 300mb package with that modem. I had to drop down to 100. I'll just purchase another modem and get them to activate it once I have it in place.

he lied. You can get the 300mb ultimate package using a 3.0 modem....I have it.
I'm running it on the surfboard SB6190 with the nighthawk AC1900
if you want the gigablast, you have to get the new 3.1 modems.
Whats the deal with the Google WIFI? I see alot of ppl getting it?

It's awesome. Leave it alone. I love mine.

That is correct. They don't support anything over 200mbs on the 3.0.

300mb from Cox does work with the DOCIS 3.0

Cox's list of certified cable modems says there are numerous DOCSIS 3.0 modems that are good for 300 Mbps.
