App to track elderly person's phone

Anyone have any advice on what to use to track an elderly person's phone? My FIL is 86, and has an android phone, but he is exhibiting signs of memory loss, and last week got lost trying to drive to our house, and I had a really hard time even getting him to describe what he was seeing where he was.
He has Android and we do as well, and my wife's sister is an iphone user. Is there an app we could put on his phone to track it in case wonders off again? He's pretty good with keeping his phone on his person when away from the house.

I think everyone in my family uses Life360.
You can see where someone currently is, if they're driving how fast they're moving, where they've been all day.
Obviously everyone in your group can check in on you as well.
Just to clarify, you can turn off tracking on your phone and still be able to track his phone. You could also just create groups that only include you and him/your wife and him/your sister-in-law and him etc... which you allow you all to track him without invading each other's privacy.

Thanks.
Looks like it's free if you are just interested in basic tracking which is fine for us.
Does each person need a separate account if I create one or do I create one and invite others into my group?

Each person needs an account before you can invite them into your group.

Google maps can do everything you're asking. I'm an android user, my wife is an iPhone user, and we can track each other with Google maps

How do you set that up though?

The maps user who is sharing location will get monthly emails reminding them that they are being tracked.

Ah, found it.

Won't be an issue, he doesn't know how to read emails on his phone, or anywhere for that matter.
And I suppose on my end after adding my email address or google account or whatever it asks to share with me, I will be able to open the maps app and will have an option to view his location in real time? Does it save any history of his travels?

It's real time location only, no location history.

Doctor won't take his license, but did tell him he can only drive in the small town they live in, and so far he is doing that.

Going to second Life360.
Like Kork mentioned, google has not history and in the case of yours, the history is critical.

Quick anecdote on the history...
A few years ago my Jr-in HS son got car-jacked in NOLA and forced to drive a drug dealer around for about an hour.
1- When he was finally able to text us his situation, Lfe360 real-time updates was what saved him.... cops were able to track him down where I was directing them to on the phone in real time.
2- AFTER that, when we were pushing arresting the guy, the NOPD Sgt flat out told us in his mind my kid was looking for drugs and got mixed up with the wrong people and in over his head. We were able to thwart that message by using the Life360 history showing my kid going from our house straight to drop off one friend, then straight to friend #2's house where he got car-jacked waiting for friend #2 to come open their gates. All of the driving around in bad places took place AFTER the car-jacking and proved my son wasn't previously driving around in areas he shouldn't have been.
You'll want the history if something ever happens to your FIL or his phone.

This.
And confused elderly people are bigger targets, even in small towns.
OP’s dad will follow his doctor’s directions to stay within the small town… until he doesn’t because he got confused.
Tracking might be step 1, but step 2 might be dislodging the battery cable to see how dad deals with it. The car will have to become a bigger nuisance than it’s worth for dad.
