Can’t catch CBS or ABC with digital antenna

Live out in Prairieville and can’t catch CBS or ABC when scanning with my antenna. FOX and NBC come through just fine. Any suggestions other than just moving the actual antenna? I’ve currently got it sitting behind my TV (solely for the purpose of keeping it out of eyesight). Not sure if even bringing it out more in the open would change anything.

Any suggestions? Are some antennas better/stronger than others? Do I have to move this thing into my attic to catch all the over the air local channels?

there are websites that will tell you where the actual broadcast tower is for those stations. You can see if it is further away and/or a shorter tower. If so, you may need to raise your antenna height.

I am in beautiful St George and put a fairly large antenna in the attic and still can't reliably catch either.

I gave up and am sticking with YoutubeTV.

Try https://www.antennaweb.org/.

Enter your address, location and distance of local transmitter towers will help you select and aim your antenna.

It’s all so dumb. Before digital I had better luck with reception. Now it seems to be either a absolutely perfect or unwatchable.

Good reception out in Central. WAFB was a pain to line up and it will mess up in bad weather but everything else is perfect all the time.

Very common problem around here. ABC and CBS are VHF so make sure your antenna picks up VHF well. Some of the smaller ones don't do as well on VHF as they do UHF.

From Prairieville both of those towers are pretty much west of you, so try to aim your antenna that way (whatever "aim" means for your antenna). Also you will have better luck with it outside or in your attic, those towers are kind of weak in addition to being VHF.

You need an attic or better outdoor antenna

You may need a bigger antenna.

I am not in your area, but I couldn't catch CBS until I upgraded to like a $200 antenna.

Appreciate all the help. I literally moved it higher about 3 feet on a shelf and it’s catching ABC now crystal clear. I’m surprised by that little bit of a movement helping that much. Now it just looks tacky sitting out in the open. I might move it up into the attic at some point to see if that help.

Good job, Tech Board!

I catch those from BR in Lafayette and they are fairly clear. Odd.

The CBS affiliate here uses old equipment with a longer wavelength. You need an antenna that is pretty long to catch it. The small compact antennas at Walmart are too small.

Banged my head against the wall a few years ago trying to figure this out.

I paid $40 for an outside antenna and raised it maybe 15 feet and then ran a coax into house. Old tech but great reception, even catch KATC in Lafayette at night. I’m in BR just off ONeal Lane.

Get over the “look” of an outside antenna. They’ve worked for 84 years for a reason.
