Home Theater suggestions - Projectors vs Large OLED TV

What is the board's opinion on home theater screens when comparing projectors (overhead or short throw - no preference) vs a large (82" plus) LG OLED G3?
Can projectors compete with the LG? I know projectors can get bigger than 83" but not sure if the extra size is worth it compared to quality picture. The room I will be putting it in probably couldn't do bigger than a 100" projection screen anyway.
What are things to take into consideration (besides obvious cost considerations)?

I used a Vava 4k UST laser projector for a few years with a 100-inch screen. However, the picture quality doesn't compare to a good TV. I went back to an 85" Samsung recently and the experience is better. You may be able to get there with a super high-end projector and screen though.

This is a pretty subjective and personal preference. Obviously TVs are inching (pun intended) up on projector screen sizes so it's getting much more difficult in some cases to just automatically say projector. I've been doing projection for >20 years now and just upgraded to a new JVC laser based model (got a deal I couldn't pass up) for my 110" screen. So I'm definitely biased that direction and even my "deal" was way more than most 85" TVs.
There are a few decision points I'd primarily consider:
* How close do you sit? It's all about viewable screen size / angle. When you go to a theater do you sit really close, or in the back?
* Lighting - obviously holding up to some light in the room strongly favors a TV, so if that's a consideration a TV is the easy call.
* Setup logistics - obviously you have to run signal & power to a projector, which can be challenging in some rooms. As the previous poster mentioned, UST or ultra-short throw projectors can help here, but they are also a bit pricier.

This is very helpful. My room is pretty long but is also used for other things as a playroom. So my seating will be about 10 or so feet from the screen (I can back it up if that's too close). I can also get the room pitch black.
I'm leaning towards the new 83 inch lg g3. But still not sure if I'm losing out on a bigger screen (and better picture?) to get a real home theater experience.

I have an LG Hu810pw for 2 years now on a 120 in screen. It has been fantastic. My front speakers are hidden behind the screen so that's a plus. The picture quality is excellent. Doubt it could be as good as OLED but it's up there.

Price wise, what would I be looking at to get a projector with comparable picture quality as lg oled?

Honestly, IMO that starts with the JVC projectors due to their stellar black level, which is one of the key strengths of OLED. A new JVC DLA-RS1100 (same as the DLA-NP5 just a different distribution stream), their entry (bulb based) model, retails for $7K. I see the NP5 on sale for $6K and have seen even better deals on "b stock" units from AV Science (which is where I got the deal on mine and can highly recommend). There are laser based models from Sony & Epson for a little less. But the JVC will beat them and has done so in head to head competitions I've read from at least 2 projector shootouts.
Now, that's not to say you can't get acceptable PQ from something in the $2.5-3K range where a lot of the better DLP 4K models are. But you mentioned having a room that can be blacked out, and that's where you can actually get the benefit of the JVCs. There are also used ones from the previous series, like the DLA-RS2000 / DLA-NX7.

Honestly, I don't know because it would be out of my reach. Sony has a few options from $6-$12k and they are supposed to be quite good.

I have a Samsung UST I really like. A 100" screen is 30% bigger than an 85", and that's why I can't go back.
I wish I could get a bigger screen for my room but can't. FIL has a 125" setup with a Sony and Revel sound system. It's just too cool.

There's a tradeoff, but there's also a budget. You can get decent blacks from a JVC but it's gonna cost you.

I'd rather have an 83 inch OLED than a front projector for that size. There's something to be said in a dedicated blacked out theater with a 120 or 140 inch screen. FPs are pretty good compared to an LCD, but man if you watch a dark movie it's still untouchable. Not to mention the brightness from an OLED will be significantly better as well as the blacks.

projectors done right are immersive but the difficulty of getting Dolby Vision with a projector is something to be aware of.

Depends on the room but LG wouldn’t be my choice

It is really a personal preference but also depends on the room size. Are you going for sharpness and detail or full immersion? i personally think the 83" OLED can't be topped.

AV Science has a great deal on some JVC projectors. Won't last so check quickly if you are at all interested. This is where I got my last 2 projectors, both JVCs.
