Man when Cable TV alone became more expensive than electricity and gas combined I am losing my patience.

I don't even have a full complement of packages (no HBO, Cinemax, etc.) and they recently raised rates to $172/mo.

Is YoutubeTV a good alternative?

-I watch a few movie channels (MGM series, BBCA, AMC, CMT)
-We enjoy having access to SEC TV for some LSU games
-I watch Smithsonian channel, Discovery, and others on occasion in the evenings
-F1 and Indycar races are also on ESPN and other networks although we do also have ESPN+ online only through our cell phone plan.

It seems like the game is rigged now to where you are close to cable TV prices just to cobble together a package that is similar elsewhere through streaming services.

The value now is traveling or splitting costs with neighbors or family.

I have cut the cord. Same reason you are talking about. I have gotten used to making do with YouTube TV plus a couple of streaming services.

YouTube TV + your favorite streaming service is still a better value than Cox Cable TV even with the increasing prices of those streaming services.
According to Copilot, Cable TV still held 71% of the market share in 2021 though that number continues to decline due to competition with streaming services.
The visual quality of the streaming service transmissions is also better than Cable TV.
As such, I am convinced that reasons Cable TV still hold significant market share:
1. People don't like change
2. Many people don't have the technological know how to make the switch to streaming services but this advantage for Cable TV will also decline as the boomer generation dies and younger generations replace them.

With streaming services, you can cancel after the season ends (tv shows or sports) and start it back up. Of course, like on Paramount+, when one show you like ends, another starts up, but that's on purpose. The proper way to do this is you wait until most shows on Paramount+ have run for the year, then you sign up and binge those shows for 2 months, then cancel until next year.

This board is full of people that fellate YTTV. Be sure to explore all alternatives. Maybe you hate the menu on YTTV, but you don't need to buy as many add ons with Hulu, etc. You can cancel after a free trial if you want, etc.

That's like saying people can figure out a Comcast menu, but having the extra step of selecting Hulu off of a Roku menu is a bridge too far. If these old farts successfully made the transition from rotary dial phones to touch tone, they can do this too. It's not hard to teach them, "meemaw, your Price is right is on this green button here, and your golf channel is on this blue button here." They're probably not trying to watch English Premiere league where your team can be scattered across three channels depending on the day and which cup they're going for. And if they were, they'd create their own TV guides each week on which channel to turn to on which day, because EPL fans are maniacs, no matter how old.

Also just an FYI - some streaming services are included with other things you already pay for - AT&T mobile service includes an HBO Max subscription.

The only reason I wouldn't recommend Youtube TV at this point is if you have bad WiFi. Other than that it's still the best value imo.

This works really well with AppleTV. They do not have a big enough catalog to where you get too backed up only watching them for 2 months out of the year.

Best bet would be to think of all of the channels your family watches, looks like you covered most, and check all of the packages from YTTV, Hulu Live, Sling, Fubo (did I miss any that include sports) and see which ones offer the most bang for your buck.

I cut the cord 20 years ago and never regretted it once.

Occasionally when I'm traveling for work I'll flip channels in the hotel room and quickly realize "nope, 200 channels and not a damn thing worth my time"

The reason we haven't cut the cord is that I hate the way streaming handles fast forwarding, searching and navigating through a stream. In my house we're zipping around the program. I'd also like to be able to record shows without a lot of hassle.
