Sonos alternatives

Setting up a 4 zone system and wondering if any better or cheaper alternatives have come along?

I am using Denon HEOS speakers, which I control through Spotify primarily. I only have an NV150 and a 250. I had Sonos all over the house back in the day, but with the complaints about the new app, didn't re-buy what the ex took.

I was going to recommend Denon as well. They can be a tad expensive for what they are, but it's a good product.
It really just depends on what you're starting out with OP. If it's a clean slate, then HEOS is fine.

I got the 250 on "sale" (not sure if it's always on sale from Denon direct or not) for $330ish last week. Intoxicated purchase that I'm very pleased with

Amazon echo. Not joking. These things synchronize perfectly and have better music platform integrations. They also gain features/updates every year instead of getting more locked down and difficult to use.

Why not just dig up your old android phones and just place them around the room and use them?
Who needs premium sound, subwoofers, etc when you have Amazon dots on the countertops.

The echo (full version) and echo studio are fine. The dots will be missing a lot of notes on both ends of the spectrum in an obvious way.
I had really big speakers before I had a wife and a well-decorated home. I have a 60 pound, “portable” I build if I need to rock. It stays in the garage.
The echos sound as good or better than most ceiling stuff and that is the comparison. They also look great and the wife loves to accessorize them.
You don’t want fidelity in a multi-zone or whole-home system.

Yes I’m sure. The whole point of a multi room audio is to cater to people moving around. The point is to fill all areas as consistently as possible so everyone gets the same experience. High fidelity is the exact opposite. The listener is still and you know where they are, so all of the focus is on that small area. Mixing up the two concepts never works well.

I have seen people talk about a WiiM amp but I have not looked at them since im deep into sonos gear and the new app doesn't bother me.

Before I shite on your point, I went and looked, and it's not just Dots and the Show anymore. Because lawd, I was about to.

I actually tried the Echo Sub and it's next to worthless. The Echo Studio might be decent for a kitchen speaker, but honestly there's no room for growth with the Amazon speakers.
If money is tight. Just start with a couple Denon HEOS 150 speakers and go from there. The sub is substantially better (still anemic) and the larger speakers like the 250 and 350 give something that can actually fill a room with good sound without distortion.

Yamaha has a nice ecosystem. I have four receivers in my house and I like them. I bought them about 5 years ago so I’m uncertain if it’s the best now. They are always pushing updates.

I have yamaha musiccast as well and It's a pain if you use 1 receiver for more than 1 zone. It often times wants to play in both zones.
